What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground a single vellum folio appears, its surface creamy, slightly cockled and stained with age, inscribed on the left with seven lines of black Latin script in a neat Gothic hand, each line opening with a small historiated initial in blue, burnished gold, red and orange with intricate geometric infill. A slender vertical rule of bright gold leaf separates the text block from the wide margins. Surrounding the writing is a lavish ivy border that springs from a central golden stem at the top and bottom, its curling blue and ochre tendrils dotted with gilded ivy leaves, tiny five-petaled flowers in red and blue, and bell-shaped terminals in green and gold. The background shows the natural tone of the vellum and a handwritten number 183 at the upper right. Perched on the vines are finely painted birds with yellow breasts and grey wings on the right, an orange bird above, delicate butterflies, and a striking green dragon-hybrid with a spiny crest and coiled tail emerging from the foliage at mid-right. At the bottom margin a minute scribe figure wearing a red cap, blue tunic and red hose leans over a light wooden desk, holding his tools, as if he had stepped out of the border itself. Even, soft light catches the shimmer of gold and the matte tempera colors.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central text block and its glittering initials on the left, then follow the golden vine that splits the page to spot birds and the green dragon. Finally pause on the tiny scribe at the bottom margin: that self-referential figure turns the playful border into a statement about the making of the book itself.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made around 1405 in Paris with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume was not a direct commission but was likely acquired ready-made on the luxury market during the king's trip to Paris in 1404–05, and his coat of arms appears on about twenty folios. It was a collaborative production showing six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The overall design and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to a Bolognese painter known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted principally on the borders by a Florentine who signed as Zecho da Firenze on folio 208 verso. The text here is from a psalm.

Curious detailDato curioso

The tiny scribe painted at the foot of the border shows the medieval illuminator at work at his desk, a self-portrait of the book's craft hidden inside the decoration.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the yellowish, wrinkled vellum, marked by stains from use and by the handwritten number 183 at the top right. I see seven lines in Latin in black ink, with initials in blue, red, gold and orange, and a vertical bar of burnished gold separating the text from the border. I am struck by the border of blue and ochre tendrils with golden ivy, blue and red flowers and little green bells. The gold still shines and the tempera keeps its velvety texture despite time and handling.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this folio like a small, ordered sky. On the left, seven lines of text in Latin are like aligned constellations, each marked by a blue, red and gold initial that works as a guiding star. Around them, the border is a vegetal orbit with blue and ochre tendrils spinning endlessly. Among the branches I see two little birds with yellow and grey chests, an orange bird at the top, a green dragon and tiny butterflies, like small celestial bodies inhabiting that golden firmament.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look how many hidden little things there are! There are seven lines with blue, red and gold letters that look like little gifts at the start of each line. All around is a vine with golden leaves, blue and red flowers and little green bells. I found two birdies with yellow bellies, another orange bird at the top, a tiny green dragon with a scaly tail and very small butterflies. At the bottom there is a little scribe with a red cap and blue tunic writing at his small desk, as if he just walked out of the drawing!
