What you would seeLo que verías

A rectangular porcelain box cover is seen in top-down view against a soft neutral gray background, filling most of the frame. It is shaped like a low truncated pyramid with sloping sides rising to a flat decorated top. At the center lies a lobed, cloud-shaped panel outlined in underglaze blue and densely filled with pierced scrolling foliage and blossoms; the openwork cutouts reveal dark shadows beneath. The interlaced vines, peonies and chrysanthemums are painted in vivid overglaze enamels of vermilion red, emerald green, cobalt blue and pale yellow, with thin curling tendrils and star-like flowers. Around the central panel runs a narrow border of reddish diaper lattice with small floral sprigs, edged by a thin blue line. The four beveled side walls each display writhing dragons in red and blue with green accents, manes and claws extended among clouds, on a glossy white ground. Light glints on the glaze, pooling slightly darker along rims and cut edges, where brushwork and enamel texture are visible. The object appears handheld in scale, refined yet sturdy, with functional piercings that are also ornamental, suggesting use as a cover for incense or a dressing box.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the pierced floral medallion in the middle and trace how stems loop into blossoms and back into leaves. Then tilt your attention to the sloping sides and follow the dragons as they twist around the corners. Finally notice the negative space of the cutouts, where absence becomes part of the pattern.

ContextContexto

Source data identifies this as a Box with Cover lid made of porcelain with wucai or five-color overglaze enamel decoration, produced at the Jingdezhen kilns in Jiangxi province, China, during the Ming dynasty, Wanli reign, dated 1573 to 1620. The maker is unknown. It is held in the Chinese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund. Wucai ware typically combines underglaze blue with overglaze red, green, yellow and aubergine enamels and was popular for courtly and export wares in the late Ming. Its exact original use is not stated, probably as an incense, jewelry or cosmetic box.

Curious detailDato curioso

On Wanli wucai boxes, openwork like this was functional: it allowed incense smoke and fragrance to escape while the cover stayed in place.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does imagining scent drifting through the piercings change how you see the object?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del objeto al imaginar el perfume que salía por los calados?
  2. What dialogue do you sense between the orderly central flowers and the energetic dragons on the sides?¿Qué te hace sentir la repetición tan ordenada de flores frente al movimiento libre de los dragones laterales?
  3. If this lid protected something precious, what would you keep inside it today?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the glaze shine and how the enamels sit on the porcelain. I see vermilion red, emerald green, cobalt blue and touches of yellow on a luminous white. The openwork center both worries and fascinates me: each perforation reveals the inner shadow and demands a steady brush. The sloping sides form a truncated pyramid and on them sinuous dragons curl whiskers and claws among clouds. I notice darker blue pooling at the edges and slight irregularities in the brushwork that reveal the hand.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this lid as a small celestial vault. The lobed medallion in the center is like a constellation of flowers and interlaced tendrils, with voids that feel like dark sky between stars. Around it, the reddish band of lozenges looks like a geometric orbit ordering the vegetal chaos. On the sloping sides, the red and blue dragons move like comets among clouds. Seen from above against the gray background, the whole piece looks like a zenith map of a portable, shining universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the lid of a treasure chest. It is square and looks like a little pyramid with the top cut off. On top it has a drawing with lots of little holes made of flowers and vines in red, green, blue and yellow. If you bring it close to the light you can see the shadow through the little gaps. Around it there is a border with little red diamonds and a thin blue line. On the sides there are dragons with long whiskers flying among little clouds. I want to lift it to see what perfume or little jewel it keeps inside.
