What you would seeLo que verías

A nearly square, rectangular object is shown head-on against a smooth gray background, lit evenly with a soft shadow to the right. It appears to be the carved panel of a comb, with only a faint trace of teeth remaining along the top and bottom edges. Its surface is warm brown ivory, darker in the recesses and golden at the worn edges, with a fine, slightly polished texture. A beaded border frames five decorated zones. In the narrow center panel stands a female deity, frontal and symmetrical, wearing a tall headdress, jewelry, large earrings, and a long pleated garment. Her chest is bare and she holds slender objects in her raised hands. On either side, separated by vertical beaded strips, stands a female attendant in a similar pose, also jeweled and bare-breasted, holding an implement over one shoulder and a small vessel in the other hand. Dense floral scrollwork fills every gap around the bodies. The horizontal bands above and below repeat pairs of birds — probably peacocks — nestled among flowers and curling vines. The carving is minute: folds of cloth, bracelets, feathers, and petals are legible despite the small scale. The corners look slightly chipped and aged.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central figure and notice how the frame sets her apart from her companions. Then compare the two side panels: their symmetry is deliberate, but their gestures and ornaments are not identical. Finally, look at the top and bottom borders, where the birds almost disappear into the foliage.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as Comb with Devi and Attendants, made by an unknown maker in Ceylon — present-day Sri Lanka — between the 1600s and 1700s. It is carved ivory and is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Robert Rousset, in its Indian and Southeast Asian Art department. The specific goddess represented is not stated, nor is it known who owned or used the comb. In South Asia, ivory combs could be practical, ornamental, and prestigious objects, so this piece probably also had a symbolic or protective meaning; its precise use is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the pairs of birds in the upper and lower borders face each other almost like mirrors, yet the surrounding scrollwork prevents them from being exact copies.

  1. How does the carving transform an everyday object like a comb into an object of devotion or prestige?¿Cómo logra la talla convertir un objeto cotidiano, como un peine, en una pieza de devoción o de prestigio?
  2. What might the symmetry between the attendants suggest about order, protection, or company for the goddess?¿Qué podría sugerir la simetría entre las asistentes sobre el orden, la protección o la compañía de la diosa?

I focus on the material: warm brown ivory that darkens in the recesses and turns golden on the worn edges. I notice the beaded border and those dotted strips that neatly separate the central panel from the side ones. The carving is meticulous, almost like jewelry work: pleated folds, bracelets, large earrings and petals still legible despite the chipped corners. I wonder how this tiny surface was polished so finely and how the barely visible teeth at top and bottom have survived.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this rectangle as a small ordered sky. The central goddess stands perfectly symmetrical, as if aligned to an axis, and on each side an attendant mirrors her pose like twin constellations. Above and below, the paired birds among winding vines remind me of bands of stars framing the center. The dense foliage fills every gap with no empty space left, like a compact and serene universe carved in miniature.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a dollhouse on a little board. In the middle there is a lady with a tall crown and a big necklace, with her hands raised, and next to her two friends carrying something on their shoulder and a tiny cup in the other hand. They all wear shiny necklaces and bracelets. Around them there are lots of little flowers and leaves with no empty spot left. And at the top and bottom there are little birds in pairs, I think they are peacocks, hidden among the flowers.
