What you would seeLo que verías
The painting depicts a coastal landscape seen from an elevated viewpoint above the sea. In the lower foreground, dark, almost black rocks touched with reddish and orange hues rise amid white foam and turbulent waters in shades of turquoise, emerald and deep blue. The brushwork is thick, impasto and highly visible, with swirling strokes that give texture to the surf. On the left, a vertical cliff slices the composition like a rocky curtain in grays and ochres, leading the eye toward the background. Beyond, a chain of cliffs covered in intense, luminous green grass, almost yellow where light strikes, extends diagonally toward the horizon. Their rugged, brown rocky bases are battered by white breakers. The sky at the top blends pale blues and soft grays with light clouds. The artist’s red signature appears on the largest rock at the lower left.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large dark rock in the foreground and follow the white foam threading between the green cliffs. Then pause on the vertical cliff at the left edge: it acts as a frame that pushes your gaze out toward the open sea. Finally look closely at the thick brushstrokes of the water, which turn the waves into an almost decorative pattern.
ContextContexto
Work by French painter Maxime Maufra (1861–1918), dated 1895 and executed in oil on fabric. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, Maufra abandoned a business career in 1883 to paint and traveled throughout Normandy and Brittany painting seascapes. During a visit to Pont-Aven in 1890 he met Paul Gauguin and his circle, whose influence on flat color and decorative composition is evident here. Housed in the Modern European Painting and Sculpture department, the piece portrays the Breton coast at Beg-ar-Fry and is noted for its bold framing with the steep cliff at left.

Curious detailDato curioso
Maufra was initially an amateur artist inspired by the Impressionists, and after meeting Gauguin in Pont-Aven he adopted a more synthetic style with flat planes of bold color arranged in decorative patterns, as seen in this Breton seascape.

If you look closely, you will see what excites me most: the brushwork is thick and pasty, almost as if the sea were sculpted with a palette knife. That impasto effect leaves grooves and swirls where turquoise and emerald blend with white foam. I love how the artist worked the oil on canvas so the dark rocks in the foreground have reddish touches that contrast with the luminous green of the cliffs in the background. It is a very physical and decorative work.

What draws me in is the viewpoint, as if we were on a high lookout over the sea. From there the horizon opens up and the sky fills the upper band with pale blues and soft grays, almost without dense clouds. That even light brightens the intense green grass on the cliffs that recede diagonally. For me it is a landscape for measuring distances and watching how the water color shifts from turquoise near the foam to deep blue at the horizon.

It looks like the sea is angry and making lots of swirls! Down below there are black rocks with white foam splashing everywhere, like a shaken juice. On the left there is a giant rock wall that looks like a slide. And in the back the cliffs have glowing green grass, the color of my favorite play-dough. If you look closely at the bottom left there is a little red signature hidden on a rock, like a secret from the painter.
