What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical print in black ink on warm, off-white laid paper, shown with wide margins and a clearly embossed rectangular plate mark. At top left there is a light brown stain on the sheet, and at top right, handwritten in pencil, the number 69. Inside the image, dense cross-hatching and grey aquatint tones build a dark, smoky nocturne. In the right foreground stands a very thin old woman, in profile, with sunken cheeks, a prominent nose, her hair in a small bun and one bare foot. Bare-chested, she wears a long, light skirt and holds, with both hands, a small naked child held horizontally, head lowered and legs stretched out. At lower left, a naked man sits on the floor seen from behind, turning his bearded face towards her; beside him a small child peers out from behind the woman's skirt, and further back lies what appears to be a skull. On the left a brazier or lamp throws a sharp flame. In the murky background, blurred faces and other old figures clutching children emerge from the darkness, as if more bodies were waiting.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the standing woman and the horizontal child she is holding: their pale bodies form the brightest axis of the scene. Then follow the child's body toward the low flame on the left, and notice the skulls and the seated man gathered around it. Finally, look into the hazy background, where more figures with children emerge, and the ritual feels larger than what happens in the foreground.

ContextContexto

Blow, Plate 69 (in Spanish, Sopla) was made by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) and published in 1799 in Spain. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is an etching with aquatint, drypoint and engraving. It belongs to Los Caprichos, the well-known series of 80 satirical prints in which Goya criticised superstition, ignorance and abuses of his time. In the plates devoted to witchcraft, elderly witches and defenceless children create deliberately disturbing scenes. It is not known that this image illustrates a specific documented event; it is probably an invented scene with a satirical and moralising intent.

Curious detailDato curioso

The number '69' is not printed inside the image; it can be seen handwritten in pencil in the upper right margin of the sheet, outside the plate mark.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Who holds power in this scene, and how is that expressed through bodies, height and light?¿Quién tiene el poder en esta escena y cómo se expresa mediante los cuerpos, la altura y la luz?
  2. Why might Goya use witches and children to criticise superstition, rather than depicting real people of his time?¿Por qué Goya pudo usar brujas y niños para criticar la superstición, en lugar de representar a personas reales de su tiempo?
  3. Does the image invite fear, pity, disgust, or a mixture of these, and which visual detail weighs most in that reaction?¿La imagen invita al miedo, a la compasión, al rechazo o a una mezcla de todo ello, y qué detalle visual pesa más en esa reacción?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see the rectangular mark of the plate embossed on the laid paper in a warm bone tone. At the top left there is a light brown stain and at the top right the number 69 written in pencil. Notice the dense hatching and the gray washes of aquatint that Goya used together with etching, drypoint and burin to create that smoky nocturne. I am interested in how the black ink settles on the fiber and how the light from the brazier cuts the bodies out against the darkness.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This night is not made of stars but of smoke and superstition. The brazier on the left throws a sharp flame that is the only light source, like an inverted moon that does not illuminate but distorts. Goya does not paint a sky, he paints a thick darkness where in the background blurry faces and old women clutching children emerge, like grotesque constellations. It is a nocturne without astronomy, where people in 1799 saw witchcraft where we would see shadows and fear.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It scares me a little but I cannot stop looking. The skinny lady is barefoot, with no clothes on top, and she holds a child like a straight board with his head hanging down. Next to her there is a man sitting on the floor with no clothes looking at her and another child hiding behind her long light skirt. In the back there are more ladies with more children in the dark and a tiny little flame that looks like a small candle lit up.
