What you would seeLo que verías

The work stands vertically and centered against a soft, gradient gray background, lit to emphasize its silhouette. At the top, a carved wooden head dominates the view: a smooth, domed skull, a broad forehead with a dark glossy patina, eyes shown as narrow horizontal slits, a short straight nose, and a small mouth with a slightly protruding lower lip. The ears are small and close to the head, with pierced earlobes, and the upper lip also appears pierced. The face is very dark, almost black, polished and finely cracked with age. The neck is slender and connects to a long, pole-like shaft in light ochre and brown tones, with a rough, fibrous and deeply fissured surface, as if hewn with an axe. Midway, a thin pale band, perhaps metal or fiber, encircles the post. The lower end is irregular, weathered and coarse. The contrast is striking between the refined, burnished head above and the rustic, raw timber below, highlighting the object’s dual nature as both portrait and stake.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the strong contrast between the dark polished face and the pale rough post. Then focus on the half-closed eyes and quiet mouth that give the face its calm. Finally notice the band marking the boundary between the visible head and the buried shaft.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a baàthíl, a headpost that around 1900 served as a temporary sanctuary for khélé, a harmful spirit released after killing a person or dangerous animal. Members of the Milkuùr religious association used baàthíla to counteract it. While the head resembles a teenage girl with pierced upper lip and earlobes, the roughly hewn pole-like bottom was meant to be buried in an altar. Devotees ritually applied materials that darkened the exposed head. When the owner died, the khélé left the sculpture; no longer sacred, it was buried. Milkuùr’s strict rules required use of appropriate wood and that artists’ names remain secret. Its cultural attribution is Lobi-style, from the region of Burkina Faso, Ghana or Côte d’Ivoire.

Curious detailDato curioso

When in use, only the dark head would have been seen above the altar while the long post stayed underground, which explains why the lower part remains light and heavily textured without ritual patina.

I focus on the contrast of materials this piece reveals. On top, the polished head darkened to an almost black tone, glossy and with fine cracks from the ritual patina applied again and again. Below, the ochre and light brown post, rough, fibrous and deeply fissured, axe-carved and meant to be buried. That light band wrapping the trunk at mid-height is our witness of the altar. It is beautiful and fragile at once: the delicate remains exposed, the rough supports from the earth.

For me this baàthíl is like a vertical horizon. Up top is the night sky: the dark head, smooth and glossy like a polished new moon, with half-closed eyes looking inward. Down below is the earth: the light post, ochre and rugged, full of grooves like an eroded landscape. The metallic band in the middle marks the equator between both worlds. Around 1900, this object was a temporary sanctuary to contain the khélé. A post planted to anchor the invisible, like a telescope driven into the ground to fix a star.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sculpture looks like two different toys stuck together. On top there is a small shiny face, almost black, with tiny eyes half closed as if it is about to fall asleep and with earrings in its ears. Below there is a long light brown trunk, all scratchy and cracked like the bark of an old tree. In the middle it has a little light ring hugging it. I imagine the bottom part goes buried in the ground and only the little head peeks out to say hello. It is tiny but very serious.

If you look from top to bottom, what two main parts form this object and what colors are they?

    HintPista

The top shines as if it had many dark layers, the bottom looks like tree bark axe-carved.

Arriba brilla como si tuviera muchos capas oscuras, abajo parece corteza de árbol tallada a hacha.

  2. #2

At mid-height of the post, what thin detail wraps around the trunk?

    HintPista

Look for a light ring hugging the post between the head and the rough base.

  3. #3

How many pierced openings can you count on the face if you add ears and upper lip?

    HintPista

Notice the small attached lobes and the center of the upper lip.
