Dated to the late 800s, this work comes from Kurkihar, Bihar, in northeastern India, and was made by an unknown artist during the Pala period (750–1134). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it belonged to a cache that yielded some of the most masterful works in the north Indian bronze tradition, at a time when tantric imagery was first emerging in the region. The vajra on the pedestal identifies it as a tantric image. Akshobhya is one of the Five Cosmic Buddhas, associated with the east, and is especially invoked to eradicate anger. Its specific original use is not known.
