What you would seeLo que verías

Against a plain gray background, a polychromed limestone sculpture stands at the center, seen from the front and slightly from below. A young woman sits on a wide, low, rectangular throne with cushions on both sides and carved finials on its arms. She wears a tall, openwork gilded metal crown with crosses and dark, green, and bluish cabochons. Her oval face looks downward, eyes lowered, with a serene expression; wavy blond hair emerges beneath a pale veil. She wears a dull gilded tunic and a heavily worn blue-green mantle that falls in broad, deep folds over her legs and spills down to the base, almost covering her feet. Her elongated right hand holds an edge of the mantle; her left helps to support the child. On her lap, to the viewer's left, a small child with a nude body and curly hair leans over an open sheet or book resting against his legs. His right hand appears to be writing. Paint is lost in many areas, exposing grayish stone; traces of gilding, ochre, green, and reddish brown remain, with rough, chipped surfaces and an aged patina.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the Virgin's downcast gaze and follow it toward the child on her lap. Then notice his right hand over the page: the intimate gesture of writing changes a maternal scene into an image of teaching and future authority. Finally, look at the worn folds of the mantle, where the loss of paint reveals the age of the stone.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a work by an unknown artist, dated to around 1400, from a Franco-Netherlandish culture, possibly active in Paris, made of limestone with polychromy and gilding. It belongs to a tradition of enthroned Virgins prominent in Netherlandish art in the decades around 1400, by extension associated with the Valois courts at Paris, Dijon, and Bourges. The motif of the Christ Child writing appeared in the third quarter of the 14th century and appealed to ecclesiastical and aristocratic patrons. Its small scale and uncarved back suggest it was placed in a niche in a small chapel or oratory, to be seen from the front. Its exact place of origin and patron are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the Virgin's paint has largely worn away, the dark, green, and bluish cabochons on her tall gilded crown still stand out sharply against the muted stone.

I pause at what time has revealed. This limestone still keeps traces of faded polychromy and muted gilding under the worn blue green mantle. I see chipped areas, rough surfaces and a grayish patina where paint is lost. The wide, deep folds of the mantle and the low rectangular throne show the carver’s hand. I am moved by how the elongated right hand holds the mantle while the left supports the child leaning to write. It was made to be seen from the front, fragile and serene at once.

I look at it like an ancient sky. The smooth gray background is like a starless night that makes the enthroned figure stand out. The openwork golden crown with dark, green and bluish gems reminds me of a small constellation above her head. The child leaning over the book is like a scribe noting an orbit. The serene downward gaze of the woman makes me think of the patience needed to observe. It is an intimate, contained scene made for a small chapel where someone could contemplate it up close.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The lady is sitting on a throne with cushions and looks very calm. She wears a golden crown with little colored stones and a green mantle that almost covers her feet. On her lap there is a child with no clothes writing in a little book. I like how she hugs him carefully so he does not fall. The paint looks old, with scratches, but you can still tell she is a mom taking care of her son while he does his homework. I want to see what he is writing.
