What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single page from a bound book, photographed slightly from above against a plain background. The paper is warm cream, matte and lightly textured, with the fine shadow of adjoining pages visible at the left edge. At upper left, the title “The Queen of the Fishes” appears in orange-red type, preceded by a small floral ornament. Most of the page is filled with English text set in a dark gray, handcrafted-looking typeface, full of ampersands and irregular spacing. The text wraps around a rectangular woodcut printed in gray, set into the upper portion. Inside that dense, diagonal frame of hatched lines, a child in a wide-brimmed hat lies hidden among tall grass, leaves, and plants. One arm reaches forward, the hand open over flowers in the lower right corner of the image, while the face, in profile and with eyes lowered, emerges from the foliage at upper right. Short, repeated strokes suggest stems, wind, and dappled light. The page number “2” appears at lower right. The overall effect is intimate and handmade: ink slightly uneven, edges soft, and scale that invites close, quiet reading.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orange-red title, then move to the rectangle of the image as if it were a small window opening onto the grass. Follow the child's outstretched arm toward the flowers at the lower edge and notice how the diagonal lines suggest a body sliding or dreaming among the plants. Finally, read the words that wrap around the image and note that the dream and the page are inseparable.

ContextContexto

This is plate 2 of *The Queen of the Fishes*, dated 1894, by Lucien Pissarro (1863–1944), a British artist and son of French Impressionist Camille Pissarro. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, he moved to England in 1890 and, with his wife Esther Bensusan Pissarro, founded the Eragny Press in 1894 after acquiring a printing press. Influenced by William Morris, they took part in every stage of making their books: design, woodblock cutting, typesetting, and printing. This was the press's first book, based on an old fairy tale in which a peasant boy and girl escape hardship by imagining themselves transformed into a great oak and a splendid fish.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising observation: although the tale speaks of a river full of fish, this plate shows no water or fish at all — only the dreaming child hidden in the grass, as if the vision were about to begin.

Look closely at the warm creamy paper and its soft matte texture, with that thin shadow on the left where the pages gather. The reddish orange title at the top contrasts with the dark grey artisanal type full of symbols. I linger on the woodcut: diagonal and crosshatched lines form dense grass where a child in a wide brimmed hat hides. Notice the slightly irregular ink and soft edges, typical of a handmade process where the block was carved, the type was set and everything was printed with great care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This page reminds me of watching the sky with the naked eye, searching for something hidden. The woodcut is like a star field made of lines: you have to learn to look through the noise to find the figure. There is the child among the tall grass, with an arm stretched toward some flowers and the face in profile looking down. It is an exercise in patience, like reading a sky chart printed in grey on creamy paper, where dappled light appears among short repeated strokes that suggest wind.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There is a child hidden in the grass! At first you only see lots of little lines, but if you look carefully his hat and his face in profile appear. He is lying among plants and flowers and stretches his hand as if he wants to touch them. I like that the title is in reddish orange and the rest is dark grey on creamy paper. It feels like a secret hiding place in a fairy tale where you can imagine turning into something else, like a tree or a fish, and no one can find you.
