What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, centered against a flat, matte medium-gray background, a single ancient fibula is shown in side view, its silhouette recalling a small boat or a deep crescent. The main body is a hollow, boat swell, thickest at the center and tapering toward both ends, its surface rough and mottled with corrosion in pale verdigris green, soft gray and dark brown. Faint incised decoration appears at each end of the swell, with groups of short diagonal parallel lines. Spanning the open top is the pin: a thin, gently bowed rod in reddish brown with specks of green patina, originating from a coiled spring on the left — a tight spiral with a small circular hole in its center — and resting in a small folded catch plate on the right. Soft, even lighting reveals a porous, flaking texture, subtle highlights on the raised belly of the bow, and darker, pitted areas where the bronze is most corroded. The scale reads as small jewelry, a dress fastener, isolated for study with no other props, casting a faint soft shadow beneath it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the boat-like outline, then trace the thin pin from the coiled spring on the left to the catch on the right. Notice how the tiny spiral and folded plate reveal it as a functional clasp, not just ornament. Finally look at the incised lines and the green patina that speak to age and craft.

ContextContexto

According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a boat-shaped fibula of Etruscan culture, dated to 900–700 BCE, made in bronze and classified as jewelry in the Greek and Roman Art department. The maker is unknown. Such fibulae were brooches used to fasten clothing and are common finds in Iron Age funerary and votive contexts in Italy. The navicella type, with its swollen arched bow, is characteristic of Villanovan and early Etruscan metalwork. No specific findspot or excavation history is given in the record, so its precise origin within the Etruscan area is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The greenish-blue coating is verdigris, the natural patina bronze develops after centuries of burial, now a key visual marker of ancient copper alloys.

What captivates me most is the skin of the metal. This bronze is covered by a mottled patina in bluish green and light gray with dark brown areas from corrosion. It looks porous, with flaking and varied sheen depending on the light. I also pause at the fine geometric incisions at the ends, those parallel diagonal lines that are still visible. The reddish pin with its spiral spring on the left and the small folded catch plate on the right are still fulfilling their function after almost three thousand years.

I see it as a tiny moon or a ship floating. That hollow bulging arch, wider in the center and tapered at the ends, reminds me of a little navicella sailing through time. I love the spiral spring on the left with its circular hole, it looks like a miniature galaxy. Dated between 900 and 700 B.C., in the Iron Age, this Villanovan Etruscan jewel was a brooch to fasten clothing and today it makes us look back as if we were observing distant stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and tiny little boat. It is like a chubby half moon in the middle with pointy ends on the sides. It has funny colors like green with gray and brown because it is rusty and looks rough. It has a long little stick on top that is the pin to hold clothes and on one side it has a little curl like a snail. I imagine that long ago someone wore it on their cloak and now it is here alone on a gray background.
