mulberry bark (Broussonetia papyrifera)
What you would seeLo que verías
A long horizontal rectangular textile displayed against a neutral gray background, with frayed, irregular upper and lower edges that expose loose bark fibers. The base cloth is a light creamy-beige with a matte, porous and slightly wrinkled texture typical of beaten bark. The design is structured in horizontal bands and rectangular blocks. Along the top and bottom run two continuous black borders with a repeated geometric pattern of lozenge shapes and cross-like forms creating a lace-like effect. The central field is divided into five horizontal stripes: two feature eight-pointed stars in black and off-white on alternating dark and light grounds, and three show reddish-brown stars on a cream ground. On the far left, a vertical panel with terracotta and cream zigzag triangles closes the composition. The black paint is dense and slightly crackled, while the reddish pigment appears more washed and worn. Visible signs of age include stains, creases and wear, most noticeable along the upper edge where the fibrous structure is most frayed and exposed.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the continuous black borders at the top and bottom that frame the entire cloth. Then follow the central stripes and notice how the contrast between dense black and softer terracotta creates a visual rhythm. Pause at the zigzag panel on the left and at the frayed fibers along the top edge, which reveal that this is beaten bark rather than woven thread.
ContextContexto
Source data identifies this work as Tapa Cloth, made before 1971 in the Fiji Islands, Melanesia, Oceania, by an unknown maker. It is made of mulberry bark (Broussonetia papyrifera) and is part of the Textiles collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art, a gift of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Munro. In Fiji this barkcloth is known as masi and is traditionally made by women who beat, dry and hand-paint the inner bark with natural black and reddish-brown dyes. The geometric and star-like motifs are characteristic of the region. No further information about its specific use or history before entering the museum is provided.

Curious detailDato curioso
Tapa or masi is not woven but made by beating and stretching the inner bark of the hiapo tree into a flexible sheet, which is then hand-painted using stencils or freehand.

I pause at the frayed edges and the porous cream-colored texture of this beaten bark made from paper mulberry, created before 1971 and donated to the Cleveland Museum of Art. I notice the cracking of the dense black paint on the borders and the fading of the diluted reddish pigment, along with stains and folds that speak of time. I wonder how to stabilize the fiber without erasing the traces of use and of the beating work done by Fijian women's hands.

When I look at this Fijian masi cloth, my eye goes straight to the five central bands with eight-pointed stars in black and terracotta on cream and dark backgrounds. They remind me of constellations lined up in rows, like a woven sky rather than a painted one. The two black borders with ovals and crosses seem to orbit that firmament, and the zigzag panel on the left end closes the composition like a horizon. It is a star map made with bark and natural dyes.

This cloth looks like a giant cookie-colored blanket with black and red drawings. I see lots of little eight-pointed stars, some black and some brick-red, lined up in rows like stickers. At the top and bottom there are two black ribbons with lacy shapes, and on one side there are zigzag triangles. The edges are all frayed and you can see little hairs from the fabric, I want to touch it but very carefully so I don't tear it.
