gilt bronze

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a small circular plaque photographed from the front, standing slightly tilted against a background that fades from black at the top to soft gray below, with a short shadow beneath its rim. It is made of gilt bronze: the relief shines in warm, uneven golds, while the thick outer edge looks dark brown and worn, with scratches and small losses of gilding, especially at the bottom and upper right. In the center, Saint Martin rides a horse seen almost frontally, its head turned to the left, with bulging eyes, flared nostrils, a decorated bridle, and one foreleg raised. The rider, wearing a hat, necklace, ample pleated clothing, and tall boots, holds the reins with one hand and draws a long saber across his own cloak with the other, in the act of cutting it. To the right and lower down stands the beggar: thin, bare-chested, with a visible ribcage, leaning on a staff and looking up. The ground is crowded with tiny flowers and leaves rendered in fine detail. At the edges are curling scroll-like motifs. The base forms a narrow horizontal ledge. Despite its small scale, the crowded relief has clear depth, rough textures, and bright highlights on faces, hands, and the horse's body.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the diagonal of the saber from the center toward the right: that line explains the whole story. Then compare the horse and the richly dressed rider with the thin, small beggar, and notice how much plant detail the artist fitted along the lower edge of such a tiny object.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this gilt-bronze plate from the early 1500s is an appliqué seal, intended as a decorative element for a garment or possibly as a simple pilgrimage medallion. Its author is unknown. The catalog places it in early sixteenth-century Germany, although it is often attributed to an artist in the northern Netherlands, in part because of the highly detailed plant life, a motif popular there at the time. It shows Martin of Tours, a fourth-century soldier who, at the gates of Amiens, cut part of his cloak to give it to a beggar. The physical qualities of the figures also suggest an awareness of Italian Renaissance art.

Curious detailDato curioso

The word 'chapel' is traditionally linked to Saint Martin's cloak: the Latin cappella, 'little cloak,' first referred to the place where the relic of his cloak was kept.

If you come closer you will see why I linger here. The gilded bronze does not shine evenly: on top the warm gold stands out on the horse and the hands, below and on the thick edge it looks dark brown and worn, with scratches and missing gilding. I am drawn to that cloak Saint Martin cuts with his saber, because the crowded relief is deep for such a small scale. Look at the ground covered with tiny little flowers and leaves, each one patiently tooled against a background that fades from black to soft gray.

I like to think of this plaque as a small system in orbit. It is circular, like a planet seen face on, tilted against a dark background that feels like a night sky. At the center the horse seen almost frontally is the brightest body, with bulging eyes and open nostrils, and Saint Martin circles around it cutting his cloak with his saber. Below, the thin beggar with a staff is like a tiny observer looking up. Everything fits inside a crowded and luminous relief.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at the horse! It looks like it is posing for a photo with its head turned to the side and one little leg lifted. The man with the hat is Saint Martin and he is cutting his cloak with a super long sword to give it to the skinny man down below. That man has no shirt, you can see his ribs and he leans on a little stick. Down below there are lots of teeny tiny flowers everywhere and the edge has curly little tails. Everything shines like a giant gold coin but with brown scratches.
