What you would seeLo que verías

A wide horizontal engraving in black ink on aged, cream-colored paper stages a crowded mythological scene between rocky outcrops and twisted trees. At center, a muscular faun with goat legs, pointed ears and a shaggy animal skin stands in profile playing a long wind instrument; one hoof presses the stony ground and the other steps forward. To his left, a youthful long-haired figure crowned with laurel sits turned toward him, an arm extended and a bow-like instrument beside his bare legs. Around them gather musicians and onlookers: at far left, women with a lute and loose classical drapery, and in the foreground a woman seen from behind holding a large sphere. At right, a seated, partly draped figure gestures toward Pan beside an elderly bearded man, while two women recline below with a lyre and a horn. Behind them stands a helmeted female warrior with spear, shield and exposed breast. Fine parallel hatching models muscles, folds, bark, clouds and distant hills, giving the monochrome print a sculptural, theatrical density. Along the bottom runs a strip of Latin verse, with signatures and the date at lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center, with Pan standing on goat legs and playing his pipe, then move left toward Apollo and right toward the seated judge. Notice the instruments scattered among the onlookers: they make the whole landscape look like an audience waiting for a verdict. At lower right, the relaxed reclining women contrast with the alert gestures above them.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as The Judgment of Midas, an engraving dated 1589, associated with Nicolaes Clock and with Karel I van Mander (1548-1606), a Netherlandish artist active in the circle of Goltzius in Haarlem after settling there in 1583. Van Mander is best known today as the author of Het Schilder-boeck (The Book of Painters), published in 1604, a partly theoretical and partly biographical work. The print retells the Greek myth of the musical contest between Apollo and Pan, judged with disastrous consequences for Midas. It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of The Butkin Foundation.

Curious detailDato curioso

At first glance the scene looks like a concert, but the long ears visible on the seated figure at right are the clue to the punishment: in the myth, Midas receives donkey's ears for preferring Pan's music to Apollo's.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Who seems to be winning the contest according to the bodies and gazes, before we even know the myth?¿Quién parece ir ganando el concurso según los cuerpos y las miradas, incluso antes de conocer el mito?
  2. What changes when we notice the donkey ears amid so many elegant, classical figures?¿Qué cambia cuando descubrimos las orejas de burro entre tantas figuras clásicas y elegantes?
  3. Why represent a musical judgment through stillness, gesture and the arrangement of instruments?¿Por qué representar un juicio musical mediante la quietud, el gesto y la disposición de los instrumentos?

I focus on the yellowed paper and black ink from 1589 and on the fine hatching of parallel lines that shapes everything. Here the print breathes: muscles, drapery folds, bark of twisted trees and rugged rocks are built through accumulation. The sculptural and theatrical density does not come from color but from that patient line work linked to the circle of Goltzius in Haarlem with Karel van Mander and Nicolaes Clock. Below, the band with Latin verses and signatures is part of the work and must be preserved as much as the image itself.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this scene as a sky disputing harmony. At the center the goat-legged faun plays his long wind instrument and steps forward on stony ground, while to his left the laurel-crowned youth faces him with the bow of his lyre by his bare legs. Among distant hills and hatched clouds, the contest between Apollo and Pan becomes crossing orbits. The large sphere held by the woman seen from behind in the foreground reminds me that every judgment, even that of Midas, seeks a center to revolve around.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many people and everyone is watching the music! A man with goat legs plays a super long flute and walks like he is dancing. In front of him there is a boy with a little leaf crown and a weird bow. Around them there are ladies with a lute, a lyre and a horn, and a warrior woman with helmet, spear and shield with one shoulder bare. I like to count the twisty trees and rocks and little lined clouds. At the bottom there are tiny letters in another language and everything looks like a play in black and white.
