What you would seeLo que verías

A wide horizontal folding screen is divided into six vertical panels, their seams visible from top to bottom, framed by a dark red border with a dense gold pattern and ornate metal corners. Almost the entire surface is aged gold: mottled, cracked in places, and shifting between pale beige and deeper ochre. On the left, a spotted feline sits in the foreground on dark brown ground, its body turned sideways and its head lifted and twisted back, one ear pale and conspicuous. Its cream and tan coat is covered with dark rosettes, and its large paws rest firmly below. Occupying the center, a much larger tiger stretches across three panels. Its back is strongly arched, its striped orange-brown body lowered, its long tail rising and curling above it. The tiger bends its head between its front legs and looks downward, ears pressed back, white muzzle and paws contrasting with the stripes. Thick green bamboo stalks cut diagonally behind the animals at upper left, with long narrow leaves extending across the top and delicate shoots below. The right half is strikingly emptier: hanging bamboo leaves at the top, a few tiny plants, and a broken brown trunk or rock rising diagonally from the lower corner, leaving broad expanses of luminous gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the tiger's arched back from its raised tail to its lowered head, then notice how much empty gold surrounds it. Look next at the seated animal on the left: its turned gaze creates a quiet exchange across the bamboo. Finally, step back and read the right side, where the near-empty panels balance the animals' weight.

ContextContexto

This is one of a pair of six-panel folding screens painted in 1668 by Yamaguchi Sekkei (1644-1732), a Japanese artist of the Edo period (1615-1868), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Sekkei lived and studied painting in Kyoto at the studio of the Kano school, a center of traditional painting in Japan since 1500. The work uses ink and color on gilded paper. The source explains that the gold background was both decorative and practical: in traditional Japanese interiors lit by oil lamps and candles, reflective surfaces amplified the available light. It is not known from these data where the screen was originally displayed.

Curious detailDato curioso

Tigers are not native to Japan, so Edo-period Japanese depictions of them were built largely from imported images, Chinese painting traditions, and occasionally real pelts rather than from live observation.

  1. Why might an artist leave nearly half of a screen almost empty while crowding the animals to one side?¿Por qué un artista dejaría casi la mitad de un biombo casi vacía mientras concentra a los animales en un lado?
  2. Do these felines seem dangerous, playful, or both, and which visual details create that impression?¿Estos felinos parecen peligrosos, juguetones o ambas cosas, y qué detalles visuales producen esa impresión?
  3. How would the experience of this screen change under flickering candlelight instead of even museum lighting?¿Cómo cambiaría la experiencia de este biombo bajo la luz temblorosa de unas velas en vez de la iluminación uniforme de un museo?

What captivates me most is the golden surface covering almost the entire screen. It is not a flat gold, it is mottled, cracked and shifts from pale beige to deep ochre. Over time it has crazed and that tells its age. I also look at the joins of the six panels and the dark red frame with metal corners. The tiger in the center, arched and striped, and the spotted feline on the left still keep ochre and white colors that stand out against the dark brown ground. It is ink and color on fragile paper.

For me this screen is like a golden night sky. In 1668 there was no electric light, and that gold background served to reflect oil lamps and candles, like a moon lighting a room. The crouching tiger in the center, with its tail curving upward, looks like a constellation both tense and serene. The spotted feline on the left looks back, alert. And the right half, almost empty with only bamboo and luminous gold, is the emptiness of space that makes everything else shine.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the two giant kitties are playing hide and seek among the bamboo! The one on the left is sitting but with its head turned as if it heard something, and it has spots all over its cream fur. The tiger in the middle is super long, with orange stripes, crouched down and with its tail up like a spring. I like that on the right side there is almost nothing, just shiny gold, hanging leaves and a little brown trunk. That leaves them lots of space to run!
