What you would seeLo que verías

The object is a domed cover photographed frontally against a soft neutral gray background that isolates it clearly. It dominates the frame with its low, broad volume. The ceramic body is stoneware with a glossy glaze in caramel and honey tones: the upper dome is a smooth, dense brown that, toward the rim, dissolves into irregular drips forming dark, jagged peaks in bluish black and reddish brown over a yellowish ground, recalling a miniature mountain range. The surface is vitreous and shiny, with light reflections revealing a smooth, slightly undulating glaze flow. The base ring and the circular collar that supports the knob are made of metal mounts, silvered and gilded, with a satin-polished shine and subtle dark patina. At the apex, the handle is formed by a coiled snake whose body creates a braided loop; on either side it opens into two heads flanking a central bouquet of roses and leaves in gilded relief. The reptile's details — textured scales, eyes and tongue — and the flower petals are modeled with refined naturalism. The lighting is diffuse and frontal, emphasizing the gleam of both metal and glaze.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the upper loop formed by the snake and move down to the gilded rose cluster to notice the contrast between metal and ceramic. Then follow the glazed rim where the enamel breaks into dark peaks; that controlled dripping is what turns a utilitarian lid into a landscape.

ContextContexto

This is a cover for a bowl by French ceramist Auguste Delaherche (1857–1940), made around 1899–1900 in France, in the late 19th to early 20th century. The technique is stoneware with silvered and gilded metal mounts, typical of the decorative arts of the period. The work belongs to the Decorative Art and Design department and was gifted to the Cleveland Museum of Art by Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Milgrim. No further information is given in the source description, but the piece probably reflects Art Nouveau taste, which prized experimental glazes with natural effects and organic motifs such as snakes and flowers. The bowl's original use and patron are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Auguste Delaherche was celebrated for his flambé and ash glazes, letting the kiln's fire paint for him: on this cover the mountain-like rim results from allowing molten glaze to flow and blend during firing.

I pause on how the material breathes. The stoneware holds the low, wide volume of the lid and the glaze does the rest, spilling from the dense brown at the top toward the rim in irregular drips with dark bluish black and reddish peaks over a yellowish base. I see the glossy, smooth surface rippled by the kiln flow, and the silver and gilt metal mount with soft patina at the neck. The handle calls for care, the coiled serpent with marked scales and the gilt bouquet of roses show a fragile, precise naturalism.

I see it as a small planet observed head on against a neutral gray background. The dome fills the center, with a caramel brown cap that melts like a dense atmosphere and then breaks into mountain ranges of dripped glaze toward the rim. The frontal light reflections on the glaze remind me of glints on an icy surface. At the summit another constellation shines, the silver and gilt mount and the handle with the coiled serpent flanking roses, like a golden pole crowning the world.

It looks like a shiny cake that is melting. On top it is dark brown and thick and below it drips in yellow with little black and brown peaks like tiny mountains. It shines a lot because it is smooth and the light reflects. What I like most is the handle on top, it is a snake curled into a ball with two little heads beside some flowers with golden leaves. It looks very fancy because of the shiny metal ring around the lid and the very marked scales.
