Infantryman Sheltering Behind a Tree — Auguste Louis Lepère, 1914Soldado de infantería al abrigo de un árbol — Auguste Louis Lepère, 1914

What you would seeLo que verías
The work is a sheet presented in a pale sage-green mount with a thin dark border, containing four small drawings arranged in a two-by-two grid. Each panel repeats almost the same scene: a French infantryman seen from behind and in three-quarter view, pressed against a broad tree trunk at the edge of a wood. He wears a cap, a long coat, puttees or boots, and a large backpack, and he holds a rifle diagonally across his body as he leans forward cautiously. Strong black ink lines, cross-hatching, and brush washes model the foliage, bark, uniform, and shadows on cream-colored paper. In the upper-right panel, opaque white highlights sweep across the soldier and tree, giving a harsher flash of light. The lower-left panel is the most resolved and bears a signature and numbering below; the lower-right study is sketchier, with thinner, more diluted strokes. At the lower left of several versions lie dark, crumpled forms that read as fallen soldiers, while a brighter opening at right reveals a distant flat landscape with tiny trees or figures. A small blue printed label at the lower right of the mount identifies Auguste Lepère, though its smaller text is not fully legible.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Compare the four panels before focusing on any one of them; the repeated pose is the first thing to grasp. Then look at the fallen figures low on the left and the small landscape opening on the right—they change a study of posture into a scene of danger. Finally, notice how the most finished version is not necessarily the most expressive one.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this 1914 drawing by French artist Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918) is executed in pen and brush and black ink with white highlights. Its French title, Fantassin à l'abri d'un arbre, means “Infantryman Sheltering Behind a Tree.” The date places the sheet at the beginning of the First World War, which makes its wartime subject historically significant. The source does not identify a specific battle, place, publication, or final work for which these studies may have been prepared. It is therefore safe to read them as four related studies of the same motif, while their exact intended use remains unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
A telling visual detail: only the lower-left version is signed, while the lower-right version is left much looser and more unfinished than the other three.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What changes emotionally when the same soldier is shown four times rather than once?¿Qué cambia emocionalmente cuando el mismo soldado aparece cuatro veces y no una sola?

I focus on how the black ink works on cream paper. With pen he builds cross-hatching for bark and uniform, with brush he lays washes for deep shadows. In one vignette opaque white highlights almost cover the soldier, like harsh light. I see four trials of the same motif on a pale sage green mount. The lower left one is the most resolved, with signature and numbering. It is a laboratory of decisions, not a finished scene.

I see someone learning to observe under pressure. The soldier is pressed against a broad trunk at the edge of the woods, leaning forward, rifle held diagonally and large knapsack on his back. He repeats the same posture four times, as if adjusting focus. The tree is his shelter and also his observatory toward a distant luminous landscape. At lower left I make out dark lumps that look like fallen figures. It is vigilance, waiting and fear held inside a small frame.

It looks like a spot the differences game. There are four little drawings alike arranged like a window with two on top and two below. In all of them there is a man with a cap and long coat hiding behind a big tree, crouched a little with his rifle. Some are more smudged with black and others have white like snow on top. In some of the lower ones you see dark little lumps on the grass and far away tiny trees. I like to find which one is the lightest.
