What you would seeLo que verías

Five studies are gathered on a single white mounting sheet, framed by a grey-green mat and a thin dark border. At the top are two vertical pencil sketches in loose, grey, searching lines; below are three versions in much more strongly contrasted black ink. The motif repeats throughout: an infantryman in profile, leaning to the right, rests both hands and his chin on a long rifle planted in the ground, as if it were a walking stick. He carries an enormous, bulging backpack with canteens and tied bundles, a long greatcoat, puttees and boots. His stooped posture conveys weight, sleepiness and exhaustion. In the upper sketches the lines overlap as the artist works out the position of the legs and arms, barely suggesting a crowd and explosions in the background. Below, the ink forms dense black masses in the coat and backpack, reserving white for the face, hands, sky and dust. In the centre the figure bends even further, his face almost hidden. In the side versions smoke, bursts of fire, distant rooftops and tiny soldiers can be made out. Handwritten signatures and inscriptions appear beneath some scenes, on cream paper yellowed slightly with age.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the same soldier from the upper sketches to the inked versions below and notice how the pose becomes heavier and more closed in. Then look at the rifle: it is not being fired, it is being used as a crutch. That small functional shift turns a combat scene into an image of endurance after defeat.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this 1914 drawing is by French artist Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918) and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the Delia E. Holden Fund. The title refers to the retreat after Charleroi, in present-day Belgium, where French forces withdrew following fighting in August 1914, at the very start of the First World War. The source lists pencil as the medium, although the mount also clearly includes black ink versions. It is not known whether Lepère witnessed the retreat himself; he probably worked from reports or visual accounts of the moment.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the two finished ink drawings at lower left and lower right are almost identical, but comparing their small handwritten marks and slight variations in the background helps reveal the process of revision between one version and the next.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in the meaning of the scene when the weapon stops being used to fight and becomes a support for standing?¿Qué cambia en el sentido de la escena cuando el arma deja de servir para combatir y se convierte en apoyo para mantenerse en pie?
  2. Why might an artist repeat exactly the same exhausted figure five times instead of showing a large battle?¿Por qué un artista repetiría cinco veces a un mismo soldado agotado en lugar de mostrar una gran batalla?
  3. Does the repetition make the soldier seem like a specific individual or a symbol of thousands of men?¿La repetición hace que el soldado parezca una persona concreta o un símbolo de miles de hombres?

Look first at the support: five studies on a single cream-colored sheet, protected by a gray-green mat. At the top, pencil leaves overlapping gray lines that correct the legs and arms; below, black ink creates very dense blocks in the greatcoat and backpack, reserving the white of the paper for the face, hands, and dusty sky. The repetition shows a studio method, moving from light sketching to final contrast. Also notice the signatures and handwritten inscriptions beneath some vignettes, integrated into the mount.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

See how light changes without color. In the upper sketches the gray pencil suggests a hazy dawn, with explosions and a crowd barely hinted in the background. Below, the ink turns the scene nocturnal, the greatcoat and backpack become a black mass that absorbs light, while face, hands, and sky remain white, as if a flash were cutting out the silhouette. The central figure, even more hunched and with no visible face, feels like an eclipse of the individual against the horizon of smoke and distant rooftops.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This little soldier is so so tired. He leans on his rifle as if it were a walking stick and rests his chin on top, with his eyes almost closed. His backpack is huge, it looks like he is carrying his whole house with little balls that are canteens. There are five little drawings of the same man, two light ones on top and three very black ones below. In the lower ones his coat looks like a big ink blot. In the back you see tiny dots that are other soldiers and little clouds that are explosions.
