What you would seeLo que verías
A luxurious rectangular casket on four scrolled feet is shown in three-quarter view against a neutral grey background. Its body combines bright silverwork with polished hardstone panels. The sides are clad in vivid lapis lazuli, deep blue mottled with white and gold veins, framed by dense silver mounts with gilded accents and enamel. On the front, a central gilt cartouche holds a finely chased mythological relief with nude figures in motion — Cupid and Psyche — set among foliage and rocky ground. The surrounding frame erupts in Baroque scrolls, shells and foliate garlands that seem to grow over the stone. The slightly domed lid with cut corners repeats the pattern: bands of emerald-green malachite with characteristic banding, more lapis, and a central oval gilt plaque with an inscription. A twisted rope border runs along the lower edge of the lid and a shield-shaped escutcheon marks the clasp. Light catches the high polish of the metal, the glassy depth of the stones and the shadows of the openwork sides, where additional small medallions appear. The overall effect is one of weight, opulence and jewel-like craftsmanship on a grand yet intimate scale.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the gilt relief on the front, then follow the tangle of silver scrolls that frame it. Notice the color dialogue between the blue lapis on the body and the green malachite on the lid. Watch how light plays differently on reflective metal and deep, opaque stone, revealing Baroque virtuosity.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this silver, partly gilt casket with malachite, lapis lazuli and enamel was the gift of Pier Gregorio Boncompagni Ludovisi to Francesca Ottoboni on their marriage in 1731. The union joined two powerful Italian noble families — the Boncompagni Ludovisi from Bologna and the Ottoboni from Venice — both settled in Rome in the 17th century and closely tied to the papacy. In the 1600s and 1700s, such caskets held coins or valuables given at betrothal and remained the wife's property as a reserve and status symbol. Adorned with scenes from the myth of Cupid and Psyche, in which lovers overcome obstacles to marry, it is a masterwork of Roman Baroque silversmithing. Maker unknown.
Curious detailDato curioso
Caskets like this were not merely decorative; they functioned as a wife's personal treasury, to be used in times of need and displayed as proof of family prosperity.

Come closer and you will see why I call this a large jewel rather than just furniture. The blue lapis lazuli with its veining and the green malachite are not paint, they are polished stone panels set in silver with enamels and gilding. I love the frame of scrolls, shells and foliage on the front, all hand pierced around the relief of Cupid and Psyche. The domed lid, the shield-shaped clasp and the four curved little feet show incredible control over metal and light.

This casket feels like a small night sky kept in a box. The lapis lazuli, with its deep blue speckled with white and gold, looks like a starry vault, and the green malachite forms bands like planetary rings. I like to imagine someone opening it in 1731 by candlelight, with the silver making those stones sparkle like constellations. It is a miniature universe crafted to celebrate an alliance between two very powerful families in Rome.

It looks like a real princess treasure chest! It is shiny blue and green, as if little pieces of a planet were glued on, and it has tiny animal-like feet. In the center there are little figures without clothes playing among rocks and tiny plants, all in gold and silver metal. There are lots of swirls and little shells around it. I would keep my coins, my plastic rings and my most important secrets inside because it has a lock and looks very safe.
