brass with blue enamel decoration
What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, against a smooth background that shifts from dark gray at the top to light gray below, stands a slender cylindrical object photographed from the front and slightly from above. It fills almost the full height of the frame. Its actual size cannot be determined without a reference, although its shape suggests something made to fit in one hand. The body is a straight tube of aged brass, in muted gold, brown, and greenish tones produced by corrosion. It is covered with a regular pattern of small blue enamel squares arranged like a checkerboard wrapping around the surface. Some squares are chipped, darkened, or missing, revealing pits, stains, and a small reddish mark on the lower half. At the top sits a short, slightly wider cap, also metallic and heavily worn, with a decorative band of repeated pierced or engraved motifs that are now hard to read. A small circular loop projects from its right side, as if for hanging or tying the object. On the right side of the tube, about midway down, there is another irregular, broken protrusion. Soft light creates faint highlights and a minimal shadow beneath the rounded base.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the blue checkerboard and follow it around the cylinder until the pattern disappears at the edges, a reminder that this is a rounded object, not a flat surface. Then look at the lid and its small ring, and finally search for the worn spots where the enamel has been lost. Those breaks in the pattern are what most clearly reveal its age and handling.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a kohl tube by an unknown maker, dated 305 BCE–395 CE and attributed to Egypt in the Greco-Roman period, spanning the Ptolemaic dynasty and the Roman Empire. It is made of brass with blue enamel decoration and is classified as a cosmetic object. Kohl is a dark cosmetic traditionally applied around the eyes in ancient Egypt and neighboring regions, for adornment and, in the beliefs of the time, for protection. This tube probably held the powder or paste and helped keep it portable. Its owner, exact place of manufacture, and findspot are not known; the very broad date also calls for caution.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail is that the checkerboard still reads clearly despite centuries of wear: the contrast between the matte blue enamel and the corroded brass keeps the pattern legible even where individual squares have chipped away.

This little tube speaks to me of time and use. I see aged brass with brown and greenish corrosion spots, and the blue enamel checker pattern is chipped and missing in several small squares. The lid is also heavily worn and its decorative band is barely legible. The small ring on the right and the broken bump at mid-height show knocks and losses. I cannot invent its story, but its wear confirms it held kohl and traveled in hands and pouches centuries ago.

I look at it and think of constellations. That regular pattern of blue squares on dull gold reminds me of a star map, as if each tiny cell were a star neatly arranged in the night sky. The slender vertical tube, still glinting despite corrosion, looks like a pocket telescope for storing darkness, just dark kohl to paint eyes. The little hanging ring would be perfect to carry your own night around your neck while walking under the sun.

It looks like a giant marker case but tiny. It is golden with lots of blue little squares like a chessboard and it has a small lid on top with a little ring to hang it like a keychain. Some squares are scratched and there are brown and green spots, as if it was used a lot. I imagine they kept black eye paint inside and carried it everywhere. It stands straight up and fits in your hand!
