What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows only the base of a sculpture, isolated against a studio gradient background shifting from light grey in the foreground to dark charcoal behind. The object is elongated and highly irregular, carved to evoke moving water. A central sinuous ridge in jade and emerald green rises into sharp, flame-like crests with finely incised lines suggesting currents and foam. The outer edges flare into fan-shaped, ruffled forms with brown and amber tips that look lacquered and glossy. The surface is polished, with color transitions from pale green in the hollows to deep reddish brown on the wave tips, creating depth and a wet appearance. Side lighting emphasizes the relief and casts soft shadows beneath, revealing how thin and delicate the carved edges are and how intricate each fold remains. No human figure is visible in this view; only the pedestal formed as a raft amid tinted ivory waves. The scale appears small and intimate, an object meant for close, quiet contemplation.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the central green current that sweeps across the piece like a choppy river, then trace the dark, ruffled rims that frame it. Notice how each tiny peak is carved to catch light differently, suggesting foam and motion. Picturing the absent serene figure on top transforms the empty sea into a narrative stage.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, the complete work depicts He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals of the Daoist pantheon, carved in colored ivory during the Qing dynasty in the 1700s. Tradition identifies her with He Qiong, a Tang dynasty girl who was said to have attained immortality after a dream revelation. The full sculpture shows her calmly seated on a gnarled wooden raft among green-tinted waves, with a bamboo basket and a branch of lingzhi fungus, symbols of longevity. The photograph provided captures only the wavy base without the figure. The maker is unknown, and the work belongs to the Chinese Art department.

What you see here is just the base, but what a base it is. Those green and brown waves are not stone, they are dyed ivory from the eighteenth century, polished to a shine. Notice how the carver shaped each super thin crest, almost translucent against the light, with golden brown tips along the edges. The color shifts from pale jade green to reddish brown at the points, as if the water were truly wet. It is miniature work meant for close viewing, made with great patience and control.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to imagine this base as a sea in miniature, an ocean carved by hand. Those green waves look frozen in motion, as if time had stopped. He Xiangu, the Daoist immortal once standing on this raft, lived between sky and water in legend. To me, these crests recall orbits and flows, like currents of energy. It is small and delicate, yet it suggests vastness, just like looking at the night sky through a small telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a water dragon made of candy! The waves are green like jelly and have little brown and golden tips. If you touch them with your eyes, they look slippery and shiny, like when the sea makes foamy bubbles. It is just the bottom part of a statue, the immortal lady is not there, only her little raft with waves. I imagine if you put it on real water, it would float and make a splash. It is tiny but full of swirls and curves.
