What you would seeLo que verías

A round porcelain plate is shown frontally, almost filling the frame, against a smooth dark-to-light grey background. Its glossy surface catches a soft reflection on the lower left of the well, and a faint shadow falls beneath it, suggesting it is held upright for photography. The broad central well is plain, luminous white, and completely empty except for a small emblem placed exactly in the middle. That emblem shows a large golden chrysanthemum with clearly divided petals, in front of two thin crossed poles with small red-and-white flags or banners whose fabric seems to hang and finish in fine tassel-like lines. Beneath it runs a short horizontal cord in red, gold and dark tones. Around the well, decoration is arranged in strict concentric rings: a narrow beaded white-and-gold line, a wide gold band with a fine incised geometric pattern, then a vivid turquoise-blue ring. On the blue ring, golden laurel-like branches curve around the circumference, interrupted at regular intervals by small chrysanthemum flowers. The outermost rim returns to gold, with dense, delicate patterning and a very thin dark edge. The overall effect is symmetrical, precise and ceremonial, with flat colour, metallic shine and no human figures or landscape.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the empty white centre and the small emblem, then move outward as if reading rings. Notice how the tiny gold chrysanthemums in the blue border echo the large central flower, linking the rim to the imperial symbol.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this porcelain plate was produced around 1875 by the British Minton Pottery and Porcelain Factory, and its title identifies it as made for Emperor Meiji. It belongs to the Decorative Art and Design department and was a gift from Seibei Yamaoka. In nineteenth-century Britain, Minton was a renowned ceramics maker, while Meiji-era Japan was intensifying its diplomatic and commercial exchanges with Europe. It is not known from the available information whether this piece formed part of a larger service, nor whether it was actually used at the Japanese imperial court.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual echo: the small gold flowers repeated around the turquoise border are also chrysanthemums, so the imperial flower at the centre is discreetly repeated all around the plate.

The conservatorLa restauradora

From a conservation point of view I am struck by Minton's technical control around 1875. The porcelain keeps a luminous white at the center and a gloss that still reflects light softly at the lower left. I look at the concentric rings: the pearled white and gold line, the broad gold band with its incised geometric pattern, the intense turquoise blue and the outer gold rim. The gilding is applied with extreme precision, without smudges, and the turquoise looks even, which points to very careful workshop craftsmanship.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to think of this plate as a small ordered system. Everything revolves around a center: the golden chrysanthemum with the two crossed poles and their little red and white flags. From there perfect orbits expand, a pearled ring, a gold band, a turquoise circle with gold laurel-like branches and tiny chrysanthemum blossoms at regular intervals. It is a ceremonial symmetry that recalls an old sky chart, where each ring marks a distance and the order conveys calm.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This plate looks like a giant but fancy target. In the middle it has a big golden flower like a sun and two little crossed flags in red and white with tiny fringes. I love the turquoise blue ring because it looks like a swimming pool around the flower, and on that blue there are little golden branches with small flowers going round and round. The rim is all golden and shiny. There are no people or landscapes, just perfect circles that make me want to spin it like a merry-go-round.
