What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white etching and drypoint presenting an elevated view over a leafy Parisian square, seen from a balcony. In the immediate foreground, an ornate wrought-iron balustrade cuts diagonally across the lower edge, its scrollwork rendered with dense, overlapping hatched lines that convey metallic weight and shadow. Beyond it, the garden of the square unfolds: airy tree canopies sketched with loose, trembling strokes and darker ink blots for dense foliage, pale winding paths, and tiny benches. Minute figures stroll or sit in the shade. In the background, a continuous row of Haussmann apartment buildings encloses the park, their mansard roofs, chimneys, balconies and rows of windows lightly suggested with rapid, economical lines. The upper third is sky, indicated by wispy horizontal scribbles and soft cloud contours. The light is diffused, overcast daylight, and the entire surface has a nervous, sketch-like texture on creamy paper with wide untouched margins, the plate mark barely visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the diagonal balcony railing in the foreground as it leads your eye into the square. Notice the contrast between lightly scribbled canopies and the single dark mass of foliage at the center that anchors the view. Then look for the tiny figures and distant façades to grasp the quiet scale of everyday life.

ContextContexto

This is a 1937 print by French artist Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Vuillard, early associated with the Nabis group, became known for intimate interiors and Parisian city views. The work is catalogued as etching and drypoint, a form of intaglio printmaking common in the 20th century. The title refers to Square Vintimille, now Square Berlioz in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, near where Vuillard lived in his later years. No extended source description is provided, but the airy, spontaneous handling is typical of his late graphic work, which favors direct observation over decorative finish. Specific details about the edition or printing history are not given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Vuillard made relatively few prints and often sketched directly onto the plate outdoors, which gives his etchings their immediate, notebook-like quality.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the elevated viewpoint change your feeling about a familiar park scene?¿Cómo cambia la sensación del parque al verlo desde arriba en lugar de a nivel del suelo?
  2. What effect does the loose, unfinished line have compared to a precise architectural rendering?¿Qué te transmite el trazo rápido e inacabado frente a un dibujo arquitectónico preciso?
  3. Does the foreground balcony make you feel included in the scene or kept at a distance?¿De qué manera el balcón en primer plano te hace sentir partícipe o espectador de la escena?

If you look closely you see it is not flat ink, it is webs of etched lines from etching and drypoint. The balcony railing cutting diagonally in the foreground is built with scrolls and dense crosshatching that creates shadow and a sense of metallic relief, typical of drypoint. The foliage is the opposite: loose, trembling lines and darker ink blots on cream paper with wide intact margins. I love how Vuillard leaves the white of the paper as light for the paths and cloudy sky.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This view reminds me of looking through a telescope from high up. We are on an elevated balcony above Square Vintimille, now Square Berlioz, in the 9th arrondissement, and the framing feels like an oblique aerial shot. The sky fills the upper third with horizontal scribbles suggesting clouds on a diffuse overcast day. Below, the garden is a living map: leafy treetops, pale paths, tiny benches and little silhouettes moving among the Parisian trees.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It feels like I am peeking from a very high balcony! Down below there is a park full of fluffy trees made with lots of scribbles. You can see white little paths and tiny benches where very small people are strolling. In the back there are tall buildings with many windows and rooftops with chimneys. Everything is drawn only in black on cream paper, as if someone made it quickly with a pencil while getting fresh air.

    HintPista

It is closest to the viewer, with scrolls and crosshatched lines.

  2. #2

Counting the print's palette, what creamy color is the paper with wide margins it is printed on?

    HintPista

It is not the black ink, it is the light background that creates the light on the paths.
