What you would seeLo que verías

A long, narrow textile fragment is displayed horizontally against a plain light beige backing. The piece is rectangular with irregular, frayed edges and loose threads hanging along the top and bottom, suggesting age and fragility. Its design is organized in parallel horizontal bands. The central, widest band has a pale beige ground with a row of contiguous lobed lozenge medallions. Each medallion encloses a pair of small, stylized birds facing each other, rendered in muted tones of dark red, faded blue, sage green and ochre. Tiny four-petaled floral motifs in white and brown fill the spaces between medallions. Flanking this central band above and below are thin stripes in green and beige with minute geometric details. The outermost bands at the top and bottom have a deep red ground with a continuous repeat of scroll-like or C-shaped forms in beige and green, divided by pale vertical bars. The overall palette is subdued and earthy, with soft, even light revealing a dense, slightly coarse weave, worn areas, and small losses.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central band and follow the rhythm of the medallions with paired birds to notice the subtle color shifts. Then move to the outer red bands and see how their geometric repetition frames the center. Finally, look at the frayed edges and loose threads that reveal age and materiality.

ContextContexto

This fragment is identified as a tiraz-style textile from Fatimid-period Egypt, dated to the 1100s, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The technique is described as tabby ground with inwoven tapestry ornament in linen and silk. Tiraz textiles were decorated bands produced in state-run workshops in the medieval Islamic world, valued for material and symbolic reasons. The maker is unknown and the precise findspot is not recorded. The source description provides no further details about its original use, but it probably formed part of the decorative border of a garment or a prestige cloth.

Curious detailDato curioso

Fatimid tiraz workshops were state-controlled institutions; their textiles, often linen with silk details, were distributed as honorific gifts and status markers, and many fragments survived because of Egypt's dry climate.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What holds my attention most is the fragility of this band, with its frayed edges and loose threads hanging down. I see a tabby weave in linen and silk with tapestry-woven ornament, very worn, with holes and rough patches. I focus on the symmetry of the horizontal stripes and how the deep red on the borders contrasts with the central beige. Each lobed medallion with its birds is a conservation challenge, as the dense fabric is muted by centuries of light and dust.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this Fatimid fragment from the twelfth century as if it were a constellation aligned on the horizon. The central beige band is a narrow Milky Way where the lobed medallions are stars and inside each one there are two confronted birds like celestial twins. The red stripes above and below remind me of dawn skies, repeated with C-shaped scrolls like tiny moons. Although there are no embroidered stars, the rhythm and repetition make me think of calendars and cycles.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a long old scarf for a giant, but it is all frayed and has little holes. In the middle there are pretty diamond shapes like cookies with wavy edges and inside there are two little birds facing each other, as if they were chatting. They have red, blue and green feathers. On the top and bottom there are red stripes with little C-shaped figures that look like tiny hooks. I like to count the little birds and the small white flowers between the diamonds.
