What you would seeLo que verías

This sepia-toned print shows at its centre the ruins of a medieval stone castle, with crumbling walls, empty pointed-arch windows and a large, partly collapsed Gothic gatehouse. Vegetation sprouts from the masonry and crowns the broken ramparts. To the left in the foreground, a large gnarled tree with a dense, leafy canopy dominates the composition; its twisted trunk casts shade over a dirt track. To the right, additional trees and undergrowth form a low woodland. In the lower foreground, a small group herds livestock along the path: cows, sheep and goats move forward, led by two hatted figures and a woman in a long skirt carrying a bundle, with a small child walking beside them and a mounted rider following the herd. The sky is lightly sketched with soft clouds and a few tiny birds in flight. The image is enclosed in a double-line border with a brown ink wash band and a handwritten caption at the bottom identifying the castle. The light is diffuse, and the finely hatched texture suggests etching and aquatint with detailed linear work.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the gnarled tree on the left and follow its canopy toward the sunlit castle ruins. Then look at the moving herd in the foreground that gives human scale to the massive stonework. Finally notice the tiny birds and ivy on the walls that turn the ruin into a picturesque landscape.

ContextContexto

The work is plate III from the series Twelve Views in South Wales by Paul Sandby (British, 1731–1809), published in September 1775 by John Boydell in Cheapside, London, as noted in the lettering at the bottom. It was executed with etching, roulette, soft-ground etching and aquatint, techniques common in English printmaking of the 18th century. Paul Sandby was a prominent topographical artist and watercolourist who helped popularize picturesque views of Britain. The subject is St Quintin's Castle near Cowbridge in the historic county of Glamorganshire, Wales. No further description is provided in the source record from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the print is held in the Prints department.

I pause to look at how this sepia print from 1775 was made. It is etching and aquatint, visible in the fine hatching on the stone and in the brown wash of the sky and the border around it. I notice the decay of the castle, with its pointed Gothic arch doorway half collapsed and vegetation already growing between the walls. The soft, diffused light helps preserve this old paper without harsh glare, and it still holds an impressive level of linear detail.

Even though it is daytime, I look up at the pale sky in the print. It is just sketched, with soft clouds and tiny little birds in flight that look like distant dots. There is no marked sun or stars, only a diffused light bathing the ruins and the dirt road. It makes me think about how we calmly observe the landscape, as if scanning the horizon while waiting for nightfall, with the large twisted tree on the left serving as a natural frame for the castle.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at all the little animals on the little road! I see cows, sheep and little goats all together, walking with two men wearing hats, a lady in a long skirt carrying a bundle and a small kid like me. Behind them a man on horseback watches over them. The castle is all broken, with empty windows and plants sprouting everywhere, as if nature wants to play hide and seek among the stones. And on the left there is a huge twisty tree that gives lots of shade.
