What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a smooth background that shifts from almost black at the top to light gray below, a monumental male head carved in reddish-brown sandstone floats without a body or neck. It is seen strictly from the front and occupies most of the frame. The face is broad, round, and fleshy, with full cheeks, thick lips curved in a subtle smile, and a rounded chin. The almond-shaped eyes are lowered beneath strong, joined brows; the gaze feels calm rather than direct. Time has left clear marks: the nose is badly broken across the bridge and tip, there are chips on the chin, cheeks, and brow, and the stone surface is grainy, pitted, and unevenly worn. Above the forehead rises an elaborate turban, built from rope-like bands and fine parallel incisions. At its center is a plain triangular form, behind which a wrapped topknot is visible. Framing that knot is a semicircular disc carved with radiating lines and a scalloped, damaged edge, like a halo or tall headdress. Soft museum lighting models the volumes, deepens the eye sockets, and highlights the contrast between smoother skin and the richly textured hair covering.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the smile and the almond-shaped eyes, then move upward to the turban and the radiating disc behind it. Only afterward notice the broken nose and chin: the damage changes the serene expression into a reminder of the object's long material history.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this head was made between 75 and the early 100s CE in Mathura, India, during the Kushan period, and is carved in red sandstone. It comes from a larger-than-life statue of a bodhisattva, a being on the path toward awakening in Buddhist tradition. Its imposing turban is associated in the source with royalty, divinities, and nobility between the first and third centuries, while the round, fleshy face retains the power of earlier images of nature divinities known as yakshas. The artist, the original location, and the whereabouts of the rest of the body are not known. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Hoy pertenece al Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mathura was famous for its reddish sandstone, widely used for sculpture in northern India; the warm color and grain visible here are characteristic of that tradition.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what time has done and what we choose to preserve. This head of reddish brown sandstone is fractured at the nose, chin and one eyebrow, with a granular, pitted surface from centuries of wear. Even so, the skin of the face remains more polished than the turban, which still keeps its rope-like bands and fine parallel incisions. I do not reconstruct what is lost: I stabilize the grain, clean without erasing history and let the soft museum light reveal the contrast between the smooth and the eroded.

I see this head as if it were a planet observed straight on. It fills almost the whole frame against a background that fades from almost black at the top to light gray below, like a horizon. The semicircular disc with radiating lines behind the turban reminds me of a halo or a solar corona, with its scalloped and damaged edge. The almond-shaped eyes looking downward and the subtle smile give it a serenity similar to a waning moon, modeled by soft shadows in the eye sockets.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This head is huge and it is only a head, it has no body or neck. It has chubby cheeks, thick lips with a tiny smile and eyes looking down as if it feels calm. Its turban is very fancy, with little strips that look like tiny ropes and a triangle shape in the middle. Behind it has a half circle with little lines that looks like a crown. You can tell it is very old because its nose is broken and its little face is rough with tiny pieces that have fallen off.
