What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, narrow hanging scroll on aged beige silk, its woven texture and faint vertical creases visible throughout. Dense lotus vegetation clusters on the left side, filling almost the full height of the composition. Three pink lotus blooms appear at different stages: two closed buds near the top and centre, and one open flower on the left with soft pale pink petals. At the centre sits a large, withered blossom or seed head in creamy off-white with ruffled, delicately veined edges. Lotus leaves are broad, round and undulating, rendered in dark greens and ochre-browns with mottled stains that convey age; their slender, speckled stems crisscross the scene. Among the foliage are birds: two white herons at the bottom, one standing alert on a grey rock at left and another resting with its neck tucked and balanced on one leg at right; two kingfishers with long red beaks and bluish backs, one in flight on the right edge and a smaller one tucked among the central leaves. Two tiny reddish dragonflies hover near the top, their translucent wings barely outlined. The background is plain warm beige, empty and flat, emphasizing botanical and animal detail. Light is even and diffuse, without strong shadows, typical of ink and color on silk.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the dense green tangle at the centre and follow the stems upward to the pink buds. Then look for the two white herons below and the tiny hidden kingfisher among the leaves; finding that concealed bird turns a floral study into a lively inhabited pond.

ContextContexto

An anonymous work from Korea, Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), dated to the 1800s according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a hanging scroll executed in ink and color on silk in the Korean Art department. The museum notes that pairs of herons, kingfishers and dragonflies punctuate the lotus profusion, and the orientation of the birds and clustering on the left suggest it may have once been the left painting of a pair. Given its summery subject of lotus in bloom, it was probably hung for display during the summer months. The artist and original patron are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Joseon Korea, flower-and-bird screens and scrolls were often rotated with the seasons, with lotus subjects reserved for summer when the flowers bloom.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the empty silk background change the way you perceive the crowded lotus thicket?¿Qué te hace sentir el contraste entre el fondo vacío y la vegetación tan cargada de vida?
  2. What might the missing right panel have shown if this was half of a pair?¿Cómo cambia la obra si la imaginas como mitad de un díptico más grande?
  3. What seasonal qualities do the colours and animals suggest to you beyond summer?¿Qué sonidos esperarías escuchar dentro de esta escena de estanque en verano?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the aged beige silk, its visible weave and vertical creases that reveal its age. I notice humidity stains on the dark green and ochre lotus leaves, and the curled edge of that large cream withered leaf in the center, painted with a perfect vein. The soft pink pigments of the lotus blossoms still hold, but the silk asks for gentle care. It is a delicate 19th century work, and each speckled stem reminds me how fragile it is to preserve it without erasing its history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What fascinates me is how everything clusters on the left, like a constellation that left half the sky empty. That beige emptiness is not a mistake, it is breathing space, like the dark background of the sky. I imagine this scroll as the left panel of a pair, searching for its lost companion. I count two reddish dragonflies above hovering like satellites, and below two still white herons. It is a 19th century Korean summer captured to be observed with calm and patience.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant lotus jungle! There are three pink flowers, two still closed like little buds and one open like a little star. My favorite is the big cream leaf that looks like a wrinkly umbrella. Down below there are two white herons, one standing on a rock and another sleepy on one leg. And hidden there are little birds with red beaks and blue backs. If you look closely at the top, there are two red dragonflies flying. I want to count all the red beaks!

If you count carefully, how many pink lotus flowers are there in total, including buds and open blooms?

    HintPista

Look at the top and center on the left side, search for pale pink tones among the green leaves.

  2. #2

At the bottom of the scroll there are two long-necked white birds, what bird are they?

    HintPista

They stand on a rock, one awake and the other sleeping on one leg.
