What you would seeLo que verías

The work is a circular fan-shaped painting with an overall muted sepia and warm brown tone due to the aged silk. The background is a pale, misty void suggesting sky and water without a defined horizon, rendered in highly diluted ink. Vegetation clusters in the lower right and center-right: a gnarled, dark tree trunk or bamboo base extends diagonally, sprouting thin, leafless branches at the top and, below, bamboo stalks with slender lance-shaped leaves painted in dark ink with faint reddish touches. Several small songbirds perch delicately on the bare twigs; one more bird flies alone toward the left across the empty space. Near the bottom edge, two speckled ducks swim in shallow water, their reflections hinted at with soft horizontal grey washes. At the very bottom, small rocks and low grasses anchor the foreground. The fine weave of the silk support remains visible, with subtle creasing and darkened patina. Light is diffuse and cool, evoking an autumn morning with no harsh shadows, conveying stillness, fragility and quiet observation of nature.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Let your eye wander first across the large emptiness on the left, then settle on the tangle of branches and bamboo on the right where life gathers. Notice the contrast between the dry, bare twigs and the still leafy bamboo, and spot the lone bird in flight: that tiny movement opens the composition and gives air to the whole scene.

ContextContexto

The painting is by an unknown artist active during the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279), dated to around 1200. It is an album leaf executed in ink and color on silk, in the circular fan format, held in the Chinese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to the bird-and-flower and intimate landscape tradition highly valued at the Southern Song court, noted for naturalistic observation, precise brushwork and the expressive use of empty space. The current English title is descriptive and likely assigned later. No details are known about the patron or early provenance, and the darkened tone results from the natural aging of silk and pigments.

Curious detailDato curioso

Southern Song fan-shaped album leaves were not wall paintings but intimate objects meant to be held in the hand and viewed up close in albums, which explains their concentrated composition, miniature scale and exquisite small details.

I pause before this aged silk and see how time has turned what was once light into ochre and sepia. Notice the fine weave and the faint craquelure, and how very diluted ink leaves a luminous emptiness suggesting water and sky with no clear horizon. In the lower right corner the gnarled trunk and bamboo canes gather the dark matter, while the subtle reddish touches barely survive. It is an autumnal stillness I must preserve without erasing its history.

This circular fan reminds me of watching the sky at dawn, when the background is pale and empty and only a few dark specks appear near the edge. Here emptiness fills more than half the silk, like a starless sky, and life shelters below on the right among branches and bamboo. The perched little birds are like tiny constellations and that lone bird in flight crosses the void like a comet. The ducks leave soft wakes on the water, faint horizontal reflections.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little old round fan the color of light brown, like a cookie. Most of it is empty and pale, and all the interesting things are down on the right. There is a crooked little trunk with bare twigs and bamboo with pointy little leaves. On top there are tiny birds nicely tucked together and one flying alone to the left. Below, in the water, two speckled little ducks swim and you can see some rocks. It feels cold and calm, like a quiet autumn afternoon.

  1. #1

If you look at the bottom, near the edge of the fan, how many speckled ducks are swimming in the water?

    HintPista

Look in the lower area where the water shows very soft gray reflections.

  2. #2

The whole painting has a special shape, it is not square. What shape is this album leaf?

    HintPista

Look at the outer outline of the aged silk.

  3. #3

Among the black of the bamboo leaves there is a very light warm color that is barely noticeable. What tone are those subtle touches?

    HintPista

Look at the bamboo canes on the right side, near the lance-shaped leaves.
