What you would seeLo que verías

A black-ink etching on light paper in horizontal format, enclosed by a thin ruled border with slightly irregular corners. In the foreground a rugged, high cliff dominates the lower half, its eroded face rendered with dense cross-hatching and vertical strokes; a narrow river curls at its base. On a small mound at lower right, two tiny seated figures seen from behind sketch on boards, acting as internal viewers. Along the cliff edge, further left, two even smaller walkers stroll, one carrying a staff or spear over the shoulder. The middle ground is centered on a large domed circular building with a lantern, surrounded by dense trees and fronted by a small classical portico facing a sloping path; next to it stands a ruined square tower partly overgrown with foliage. Beyond, gently rolling hills, scattered trees and distant buildings stretch toward the horizon under an open sky suggested by faint horizontal hatching and a few birds in flight. Light is soft and diffuse, creating a calm contrast between the dark, heavily worked foliage and the pale sky. Lettering runs along the bottom margin with the title in the center and the publisher’s abbreviation on the right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two sketchers at the lower right, your stand-ins as viewers. Follow the jagged cliff edge leftward to the pair of walkers, then lift your gaze to the domed building and the ruined tower. Notice how dense ink in the trees against the almost empty sky creates depth and stillness.

ContextContexto

This print is from the series Diverse Views in and around Rome, by Herman van Swanevelt (Dutch, c. 1600–1655), dated 1653 according to Cleveland Museum of Art records, where it is held in the Prints department. The technique is etching, widely used in the 17th century to circulate topographical and idealized views. Van Swanevelt was a Dutch painter and etcher active in Rome and linked with the Italianate landscapists who brought classical Roman scenery to northern collectors. The view is labeled St. Adriano in Via Flaminia and is probably an idealized capriccio combining observed ruins with invented elements, as was common in souvenir series for travelers rather than a precise survey.

Curious detailDato curioso

The inscription at lower right, H.S. fe. et ex. Cum pr. Re., shows Van Swanevelt etched, published and held the royal printing privilege for the series himself.

I pause on the light paper and black ink of the etching, with that fine framing line and its slightly irregular corners that seems to breathe. Notice the cross-hatching on the cliff, how it models rocks and vegetation, and the contrast between the dark wooded areas and the sky hatched with very light horizontal lines. It is a 1653 print made to travel without moving, and the delicate wear of the paper tells its story of collecting and care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at the open sky and think about the soft morning light described in the record. The horizontal hatching creates a calm atmosphere, almost cloudless, where only tiny birds cross like dots in flight. Below, the circular building with dome and lantern looks like an old observatory among trees and gentle hills. It is an idealized view of Rome, more poetic than precise, inviting us to imagine distances, horizons and sunrises of the seventeenth century.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an adventure drawing! There is a huge cliff with a river below and on the other side a round building with a hat, I mean a dome, with lots of trees around. I like to spot the tiny people: two are sitting with their backs turned drawing and two more are walking with a little stick on their shoulder. There are also ruins, hills and little birds in the sky. It feels like everyone is exploring Rome on a field trip.
