What you would seeLo que verías

A small rectangular etching in black ink on yellowed, slightly fibrous paper, with the grain of the sheet visible around the borders. Almost the entire image is occupied by a bridge seen from very close and from slightly below: a single enormous arch spans from side to side, built of stone rendered with dense vertical lines and dark concentric hatching under the vault. Above the arch stand tightly packed houses with small square windows, irregular rooftops, and tiny silhouetted figures walking along the top. A small lamp or hanging ornament dangles from the center of the arch on a thin line. Through the opening, in the background, the river opens up brightly, with horizontal strokes suggesting calm water, small boats, animals, tents, and many minuscule people; a second, multi-arched bridge and low hills close the horizon beneath a sky striped with fine parallel lines. In the foreground, at the water's edge, several nude or semi-nude figures bathe, swim, gesture, and haul what looks like a net. At the lower left, one figure reclines on his back, seen from behind, much larger than the others, anchoring the whole scene. The contrast between monumental shadowed architecture and the luminous, bustling distance is striking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the enormous arch, which works like a window frame. Then look through it toward the tiny bridge in the distance and notice how scale changes. Finally, come back to the foreground: the bathers make the monument feel lived-in, not just admired.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this etching was made around 1622 by Jacques Callot (French, 1592–1635) and is titled The Ponte Vecchio, Florence. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it entered as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard F. Fuller Jr. in memory of Mila Bomgardner Leuthold. Callot was one of the great printmakers of the 17th century and worked for a time in Florence, so he probably knew this view firsthand. The bridge shown is the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River, famous for the buildings built along it. The specific series or occasion for this print is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in Florence not destroyed during the Second World War, and it still stands over the Arno today, lined with shops.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why do you think the artist made the bridge so large and the people so small?¿Por qué crees que el artista hizo el puente tan grande y a las personas tan pequeñas?
  2. Does the view under the arch feel more like a landscape, a stage set, or a window, and why?
  3. How would the image change if the bathers in the foreground were not there?¿Cómo cambiaría la imagen si no estuvieran los bañistas del primer plano?

I focus on the support: that yellowish, slightly fibrous paper visible at the edges holds the whole image in black ink. Notice the dense vertical hatching on the stone and the dark, concentric shading under the huge arch vault, a very controlled etching work. I am interested in how the contrast between the shadowed architecture in the foreground and the luminous background with horizontal strokes for the water creates depth without color, only through line density.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this print as if it were an inverted sky. The sky is made with fine, very regular parallel lines, almost like hatching to measure light, while the dark vault of the bridge works like an eclipse framing the distance. Through the arch a bright strip opens with the river, small boats and another multi-arched bridge beneath low hills. It is a play of nearby monumental shadow and distant luminosity that recalls looking through a telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This bridge looks like a mountain with little houses on top! I like that it has square little windows and tiny people walking on top like ants. Below a little lamp hangs from a thin thread in the middle of the giant arch. On the other side you can see the river with little boats and lots of people, and in front there are people bathing and pulling a net. And at the bottom left there is a person lying on their back who is much bigger than everyone else, as if they were holding up the bridge.

Hanging right in the center of the large dark arch, held by a thin thread, what small object can be seen?

    HintPista

Look under the shaded vault, at the highest point of the bridge opening.

  2. #2

In the foreground at the riverbank, what are several nude or semi-nude figures doing?

    HintPista

Search at the bottom of the image, near the water with horizontal strokes.

  3. #3

Through the arch, in the background over the luminous river, what other type of bridge can be made out on the horizon?

    HintPista

Look far away, beyond the small boats and tiny people, before the low hills.
