What you would seeLo que verías
A studio photograph of a circular porcelain plate, seen straight on and centered against a background that shades from dark gray at the top to pale gray below, with a soft shadow beneath its lower edge. The plate fills almost the entire frame. Its surface is white, glossy, and smooth, with a broad, wavy rim marked by shallow radial fluting that suggests petals or folds. A continuous gilt border runs around the rim, filled with tiny, finely detailed leaves and flowers and edged by a thin gold line; the gilding catches the even, frontal light. In the slightly recessed center, a single stem is painted diagonally, rising from the lower right toward the upper left. The stem is grayish green, the leaves are toothed and green with dark veining and shading, and there are three bell-shaped flowers in bluish purple. One hangs down on the left, another opens on the right to reveal yellowish stamens, and a third, more closed, sits near the top. The lowest leaf is the largest and darkest. Small highlights glint on the glaze, and the fine painted texture contrasts with the calm white emptiness around the plant and the dense, ornamental gold ring beyond it.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the center, following the stem from bottom to top and noticing how each flower opens at a different stage. Then move outward to the dense gold border and compare its ornament with the spare white space around the plant. The detail that changes the reading is the serrated, nettle-like leaf: this is not just decoration, but a specimen meant to be identified.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a plate from a dessert service made by the Derby factory (Crown Derby period) in England, around 1800, in porcelain. Each dish in the service carried a recognizable plant, with its name inscribed on the base in both Latin and English — an inscription not visible in this photograph. The source links this late-18th-century fashion to Carolus Linnaeus's system for classifying plants and to contemporary English botanical publications; illustrations in William Curtis's The Botanical Magazine served as models for some pieces in the service, including this nettle-leaved bellflower. Who painted this particular plate is not known from the information provided.

Curious detailDato curioso
The plant's name is not beside the painting but hidden underneath: the source says each dish was inscribed on its base with the plant's name in Latin and in English, so the identification only appeared when the plate was turned over.

I pause at the contrast between the bright white porcelain and the gilded border, with its radial fluting like petals; that golden rim is delicate and surely wears with use, so I look at it carefully, the central branch painted on a diagonal fascinates me for its precision, the toothed green leaves with dark veins and the three purplish bell-shaped flowers show fine shading and yellowish stamens, it is a botanical illustration made to last on tableware, not just on paper.

I see this plate like an orderly sky, the smooth white is the emptiness that lets the central species breathe, like a lone constellation, it reminds me that around 1800 in England the Derby factory made services where each plate was a different plant, following Linnaeus's fashion for classifying nature, this nettle-leaved bellflower looks copied from a scientific magazine of the time, the gilded border is the orbit that encloses and celebrates that knowledge, small, elegant and full of curiosity.

This plate looks like a princess's, it is white and shiny and has a wavy rim with tiny golden flowers all around, in the middle there is a little branch lying across the plate on a slant, it has pointy green leaves and three purple little bells, one is closed and another is wide open with little yellow dots inside, I like that there is only one plant alone on so much white, it feels calm and pretty and I would not want to use it so it does not get erased.
