What you would seeLo que verías

This is a small porcelain dish shaped like an oval, elongated basket, shown in a three-quarter view against a neutral gray background. The vessel is shallow with gently wavy walls and a thick, arched handle that spans from one end to the other like a hand basket. The surface is glossy and glazed in a very pale celadon tone, almost bluish white, decorated with overglaze enamels in intense coral red and emerald green. At the center of the interior basin sits a long-tailed bird, likely a phoenix or ho-o, painted with fluid, expressive brushstrokes in red with green details on the wings and chest. Around it swirl stylized cloud scrolls in red and scattered small maple and bamboo leaves in green. Near the top edge a small red sun or fruit floats above foliage. The exterior repeats the same scrolling floral and leaf pattern along the sides and handle. Along the rim and handle there are chips and losses showing warm beige body underneath, plus a small dark repair spot inside, signs of age and former use that contrast with the bright, smooth glaze.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the basket silhouette and its high looped handle, noticing the illusion of a woven basket made solid in porcelain. Follow the red and green brushwork to the long-tailed bird at the center, whose turn animates the whole interior. Look closely at the chipped rim and handle, traces of time that remind you this was both a decorative and a handled object meant to be seen up close.

ContextContexto

The work is attributed to Okuda Eisen (1753–1811), a Japanese potter active in the late 1700s to early 1800s during the Edo period (1615–1868). The Cleveland Museum of Art records it as a porcelain Basket Dish with overglaze color enamels, a technique widely used in Japanese porcelain drawing on Chinese Ming models. Okuda Eisen is noted for reviving Chinese-inspired aka-e and ko-Kutani styles in Kyoto kilns through his own enamel research. No specific commission or provenance details are given beyond the museum bequest, but the trompe-l'oeil basket form and festive palette reflect the sophisticated, playful taste of urban merchant culture in late Edo Japan.

Curious detailDato curioso

Okuda Eisen was celebrated for successfully recreating the vivid red enamel of Chinese aka-e ware after extensive personal experiments, and he openly shared his enamel recipes with fellow Kyoto potters.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what time has left on this porcelain. I see the pale celadon glaze, bright and glossy, with coral red and emerald green enamels painted over the glaze. The rim and the arched handle show chips where the ochre body is exposed and there is a small restored area inside. It is a low oval basket dish with gently wavy walls, made as a trompe-l’oeil. The wear confirms its age and domestic use during the Edo period, a trace of its long life.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look inside the dish I imagine a small portable sky. In the center there is a red disc that could be the sun, surrounded by spiral clouds in the same color and by maple and bamboo leaves in green. The long-tailed bird, perhaps a phoenix, seems to cross that festive firmament with open wings. Against the pale bluish celadon ground, the red and green shine like constellations. It is a miniature cosmos designed for the table.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little toy basket that turned into a dish. It is oval, short and has a big handle across the top as if you could carry it for a walk. Inside lives a very long-tailed bird painted in red with green touches, flying among snail-shaped clouds and little leaves. On top there is a red sun and everything is very shiny. I like that it is a bit chipped on the edges, so you can tell it is old and someone used it a lot.
