What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, against a gradient background from black to light gray, rests a small glazed porcelain sculpture sized to fit in the palm of a hand. It depicts a water buffalo lying down with legs tucked beneath its body, carrying a chubby young boy on its back. The glaze is a translucent, glossy ivory with a pale bluish cast, typical of qingbai ware, splashed with irregular dark brown and iron-rust spots that suggest the animal's dappled coat and accent folds and ears. The buffalo raises its head with an open snout, where a small circular spout is visible; a second, subtler filling hole appears on the back behind the child. The boy, with double topknots, full cheeks and a short robe, leans forward holding a nose ring or cord with both hands. The surface shows faint crackle, bright highlights on the glaze, and unglazed base areas in light ochre. Directed lighting softly models rounded volumes and casts a delicate shadow beneath the belly, emphasizing its compact, smooth and slightly glossy texture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the contrast between the pale glaze and the dark spots that shape the buffalo's body. Then focus on the boy's leaning gesture and the two functional openings that turn the sculpture into a scholar's desk tool.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a water dropper from the early 1300s, Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), made at the Jingdezhen kilns in Jiangxi Province, China. It is glazed porcelain with iron spots, in the qingbai or blue-white ware type. Water droppers held water used to dissolve ink sticks into liquid ink for brush painting and writing. The motif of boys tending buffalos was associated with a carefree life in the countryside, free from the duties of officialdom. Maker unknown. No further details about its original patron or archaeological findspot are recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Qingbai ware, literally meaning «blue-white», was Jingdezhen's most celebrated product before blue-and-white porcelain, prized for its jade-like, luminous glaze that looks as if it traps light like water.

I focus on what time has done to this small porcelain that fits in a palm. I see the qingbai glaze, that translucent bluish ivory with a bright shine, dotted with irregular dark brown iron oxide spots that highlight ears and folds. I notice subtle crackle, light reflections and the unglazed ochre base. Its two openings fascinate me: one behind the child to fill it and another in the muzzle to pour water with precision. It is fragile and functional at once.

When I look at this reclining buffalo with the child on top I think about how small objects also give direction. This water dropper from the early 14th century, made in Jingdezhen during the Yuan dynasty, held water to dissolve ink for calligraphy and painting. I picture the scholar at his table, like someone reading a star chart, measuring each drop that flows from the muzzle. The herder boy on the buffalo motif evoked a calm rural life, away from duties, like a clear sky after a long day.

It looks like a tiny toy that fits in my hand! It is a buffalo lying down with its little legs folded and a chubby kid with two buns sitting on top. The buffalo has its mouth open and there is a tiny hole there, and behind the kid there is another to pour water in. It is whitish with brown spots like it has speckled fur. The kid holds tight to a little string on the muzzle and leans forward as if they are about to play. I like it because it looks cute and fun.
