What you would seeLo que verías
The object fills nearly the full width of the image, lying horizontally against a smooth, pale gray background with a faint mottled texture. Seen from above, it is a thin stone plaque whose outline is unmistakably a fish: the rounded head points right, while the triangular, forked tail points left. Its body forms an elongated oval, broad through the middle and tapering toward both ends. The surface looks matte yet worn smooth, in muted grays, olive greens, and earthy browns, broken by uneven stains, faint reddish streaks, and speckled patches that reveal the stone itself. Soft, diffuse light casts a delicate shadow beneath the lower edge and catches only the slightest relief. Near the right end, a small sunken circle reads as an eye, and a short notch at the rim marks the mouth. Close to the upper edge, a round hole pierces the stone. Looked at slowly, the piece reveals fine serrated incisions running along parts of its back and tail, suggesting fins with great economy. There are tiny scratches, worn areas, and a small nick on the upper right edge. With no human hand or other object for scale, the fish seems to float, silent, over the neutral ground.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Let your eye travel first from the forked tail to the rounded head, following the fish's quiet swim. Then look for the tiny serrated marks along the back and tail, and for the drilled hole near the upper edge. Those small decisions turn a flat grinding stone into a living creature.
ContextContexto
According to the source information, this stone palette comes from Predynastic Egypt, from the Naqada II–III phases, and is dated to approximately 3500–2950 BCE; its maker is unknown. It is carved from graywacke. Palettes of this kind were used to grind eye paint, worn both cosmetically and for protection against glare and eye infections. The pigments could be green malachite or black galena. As grave goods, those colors may have carried meanings of regeneration and rebirth, linked to the dark soil of the Nile banks and the vegetation it nourished. The exact findspot is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the fish is conjured with almost nothing — a single dimpled eye, a notch for a mouth, and fine notches suggesting fins.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I look at this palette with a conservator’s eyes, focused on material. It is a thin slab of greywacke, polished by handling, in grayish, greenish and earthy brown tones with faint reddish veins. I pause at the small recessed eye on the right, the notch that suggests a mouth, and the circular suspension hole near the upper edge. Fine toothed incisions along the back and tail hint at fins with great economy. I also notice scratches, polish from wear and a small chip on the edge, traces of time and repeated grinding.

I like to think this stone fish holds memory of the Nile. According to the record it comes from Predynastic Egypt, Naqada II to III phases, between 3500 and 2950 BCE, and was used to grind eye pigment, green from malachite or black from galena, which protected against glare and eye infections. As a funerary object it evoked regeneration, the dark soil of the riverbank and the vegetation that returns each year. Floating on a light gray background, head to the right and forked tail to the left, it feels like a small household constellation.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a fish swimming with no water! It has a round little head on the right and a tiny triangular tail on the left. Its eye is a little sunk circle and nearby there is a round hole for hanging it with a string. Along its back there are little lines like fins. It is made of greenish gray stone with brown speckles and looks very smooth because people used it a lot to grind eye paint. I imagine it floating calmly on the gray background and now watching us quietly.
