What you would seeLo que verías

A medium-height cylindrical ceramic vessel, slightly wider at the rim and base, photographed frontally against a neutral gray background. The surface is very dark brown to almost black, with a matte, deeply carved relief texture. At the center, a ballplayer lunges forward in a dynamic, almost diving pose; shown in profile, his torso is wrapped in a thick, padded yoke decorated with textile patterns and beaded elements. He wears an elaborate feathered headdress sweeping backward, ear ornaments and a necklace. A circular ball hovers just in front of his face. Behind him, stepped walls suggest the architecture of a ballcourt. Around the top, just below the slightly worn and uneven rim, runs a continuous band of raised glyphs with curved and geometric forms. Soft lighting models the carving, casting shadows in the recesses and revealing faint reddish traces of original pigment in the deeper grooves. The object conveys motion, tactile density and great age.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the athlete’s lunging body and the ball suspended near his face. Then follow the sweeping headdress and the textured yoke to appreciate the carving. Finish at the glyph band along the rim that frames the scene like a story.

ContextContexto

An earthenware and pigment vessel, Maya culture, Chocholá style from Yucatán, dated to about 600–1000 CE, within the Maya Classic period (250–900). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the scene depicts a Mesoamerican ballplayer who used hips and torso — not hands or feet — to keep a heavy solid rubber ball in play; here he dives to intercept it while wearing a thick protective yoke. The stepped background likely represents ballcourt walls. The maker is unknown and the work is in the Art of the Americas department. No specific archaeological findspot is recorded; Chocholá style is known for its dark carved relief and glyph bands.

Autor desconocido, perteneciente a la colección Art of the Americas.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mesoamerican rubber balls were solid and could weigh several kilograms, which is why players wore heavy yokes and padding like the one shown on this vessel.

I pause on the surface of this cylindrical vessel, in that brown so dark it looks almost black. It is matte, rough ceramic, carved in deep relief, and the light reveals what time has done: an irregular, worn rim, shadowed hollows and tiny reddish gleams of the original pigment that survived. The player lunges forward wearing his thick yoke and feathered headdress, all modeled with strong volume. It is a piece that asks to be read slowly, with hands and patience.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this player suspended mid-fall and I think of orbits and trajectories. The ball floats before his face like a small planet, and his tilted body seems to calculate the exact moment of impact with hip and torso. Behind him, the stepped walls of the court recall observatories or pyramids gazing at the sky. Above, the continuous band of glyphs in relief feels like a strip of constellations telling the story as it circles the vessel.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the man is diving like a superhero to hit with his belly! He wears a super thick belt for protection, a giant feather hat flying backward and a ball floating right by his face. Behind him there are little steps that are the court. Up top there are lots of funny little drawings that are ancient letters. The vessel is dark, a bit scratchy and a little faded, but you can feel it holds a lot of history.
