What you would seeLo que verías

Two elongated carved jade plaques are displayed one above the other, horizontally, against a gradient background from dark charcoal gray to pale gray. Each piece has the silhouette of a crouching fantastic beast in profile facing right, with an undulating back, four short legs ending in curled claws, an elongated snout, and a coiled tail. The material appears opaque with slightly translucent edges, in ivory, warm beige and caramel brown tones, with darker mottling from age and faint greenish veining, most visible on the tail of the lower plaque. The surface is densely patterned: shallow relief bands outline muscular contours, rows of tiny raised dots suggest fur, and meandering scrollwork fills the haunches. Openwork piercing creates negative space between the legs and around the tail. The upper plaque shows wear and a break at the left end of the tail; the lower one is more complete, with a clearly defined spiral tail. Both sides are polished to the same soft, silky sheen, not glassy, and the overall craftsmanship emphasizes symmetry, rhythm and tactile texture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the mirrored silhouettes, then focus on the dotted rows and interlaced scrolls on the flanks. Notice how the pierced gaps between the legs lighten the stone and how the intact spiral tail on the lower plaque helps you imagine the missing part of the upper one.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a pair of nephrite plaques from Henan province, China, dated to the Warring States period, 475–221 BCE, in the late Eastern Zhou dynasty, 770–256 BCE. The source notes their exceptional creativity and technical achievement, describing the creatures as combining tiger-like, rhino-like and dragon-like features. Strong silhouettes are marked with shallow relief bands and subtly swelling surfaces finished equally on both sides. They likely served as ornaments or status symbols. The maker is unknown and the exact archaeological findspot is not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Both plaques are finished to the same degree on front and back, a rare feat indicating they were designed to hang freely and be seen from either side as they moved.

I focus on how the artisan achieved such clean openwork between the legs and the tail, hollowing the nephrite without breaking it. Notice the soft, even, silky polish on both sides, a sign of patient work, and the rows of tiny raised dots that suggest fur. The ivory and caramel tones with faint greenish veins are not paint, they are the natural color of the stone and its oxidation over time. The upper plaque even keeps an old break at the tail that tells us about its long history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

These creatures do not exist in nature, they are a constellation of animals: I see a feline back, an elongated snout and a spiral tail that looks like a coiled galaxy. Just as in the sky we join stars to form dragons, here the artisan from the Warring States period joined tiger, rhinoceros and dragon into a single silhouette. The fret patterns on the hindquarters remind me of orbits and the openwork gaps between the legs are like interstellar voids that let light through.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two little monsters napping one above the other, lining up toward the right! They have backs like a wavy little mountain, short legs with curly claws and a funny snail-like tail. If you look closely they are covered in tiny dots and squiggly fret patterns on their bottoms. They are cookie-colored with brown spots and a little touch of green. One has a broken tail, poor thing, but the bottom one has its tail whole and looks very fancy.
