What you would seeLo que verías

The print presents two standing figures, each set within a tall arched niche side by side on aged paper with faint foxing and soft texture. On the left, a heavily muscled man is seen from the back in three-quarter view, his head bowed and curly hair falling forward. He carries a long quiver strapped diagonally across his back, a billowing cloak puffed out behind him and a short cloth knotted at the waist that reveals buttocks and thighs rendered with dense cross-hatching and fine engraved lines; his hands are clasped together in front of his chest in a gesture of anguish. On the right, a woman stands facing forward with bare chest and a draped cloth falling from one shoulder, covering her lower body loosely while one bare foot and a knee remain visible. An arrow pierces straight through her chest, tip emerging at the back and shaft crossing the bust; her profiled face looks downward with a calm, resigned expression, arms extended outward with palms open. Small text appears at the top center and two Latin inscriptions run below each niche. The engraving line is delicate and energetic, with strong contrast between deep blacks and luminous whites that emphasize tense anatomy and folded drapery.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First compare the two opposite postures: his tense, hunched back against her open, still frontal stance. Then follow the arrow through her chest and the quiver on his back, clues that link the tragedy. Finally trace the fine hatching that sculpts muscles and drapery as if carved from marble.

ContextContexto

The work is catalogued as an engraving by René Boyvin after designs by Rosso Fiorentino, dated 1538–40 and associated with France. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art source, it reflects the spread of the Italian Renaissance abroad when King François I invited Italian artists to decorate his château at Fontainebleau. Rosso, who arrived in 1530, had worked in Rome between 1524 and 1527 and saw Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, an influence visible in the complex, charged nudes. The subject illustrates a story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses in which Cephalus accidentally kills his wife Procris as she spies on him from the bushes.

Curious detailDato curioso

Rosso Fiorentino was a founder of the School of Fontainebleau, a style that blended Italian Mannerism with French court taste and was widely disseminated through prints like this one.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What hooks me is the aged paper with soft stains and the brutal contrast between deep blacks and luminous whites. The engraving by René Boyvin after Rosso Fiorentino, between 1538 and 1540, shows two arched niches with fine nervous lines and crosshatching that sculpts muscles and drapery. I worry about the dark ink on the quiver and the puffed cloak of the man, and the arrow piercing the woman's chest. The Latin inscriptions below also need careful care to keep the text legible over time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see two figures isolated like constellations in arched niches, each in its own sky of creamy paper with a grayish tone. On the left, Cephalus seen from behind, with the quiver strapped across his back and the cloak puffed as if wind were pushing him, hands clasped in anguish. On the right, Procris facing forward, with the arrow piercing her chest and exiting her back, arms open and gaze serene. It is a tragedy from Ovid frozen like an inevitable eclipse.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two dolls in two little houses with arches, side by side. The man has no shirt, a cape that looks like a balloon behind him and a quiver hanging, and he covers his chest with his hands as if he were very sad. The woman has a cloth over one shoulder and an arrow crossing her chest, and she opens her hands as if saying why? It makes me sad but also curious about the little Latin letters under each niche.
