What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal photograph in sepia and warm brown tones shows, front-on and very close, the rock facade of a monumental Egyptian temple. Four colossal seated statues occupy the center, carved directly into the cliff and arranged in a row. The first on the left and the third retain their serene faces, tall crowns, false beards, broad chests, and hands resting on their knees; the second is broken at the torso, and the fourth is badly eroded. In the foreground, at lower left, lie huge fallen fragments — part of a head and torso — half-buried in sand, making the damage tangible. Between the central statues rises a niche with a standing figure wearing a solar disk, and below it opens the dark, rectangular doorway. Small standing figures cling to the giants' legs, revealing their immense scale. The rock surface shows strata, cracks, chisel marks, worn reliefs, and rows of hieroglyphs across the upper band. A dune slopes up from the lower right and covers part of the base, while the left edge falls into deep shadow. Light rakes in from the right, modeling faces and knees. At bottom center, handwritten in the sand area, is the signature “A. Beato.”
Beato».
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the scale: compare the entrance door with the seated figures that flank it. Then look at the second statue from the left and follow the break down to the enormous fragments lying in front of it. Finally, notice the small figures by the legs and the signature in the sand; they turn a seemingly timeless monument into a scene visited, measured, and photographed.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is *Temple of Ramesses II, Abu Simbel*, photographed by Antonio Beato, a British photographer (c. 1825–1903), around the 1860s, using an albumen print from a wet collodion negative. It shows the rock-cut Great Temple at Abu Simbel, in Nubia, southern Egypt, built in the 13th century BCE under Ramesses II. In the 19th century, images like this circulated widely in Europe and the United States and fueled Egyptomania in architecture, design, and funerary monuments. At the time of the photograph, sand and rubble still partly covered the facade. The exact day and circumstances of this exposure are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
In the 1960s, threatened by the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, the Abu Simbel temples were cut into large blocks and reassembled on higher ground in an international UNESCO-led campaign completed in 1968.

I lean in as if the print were on my work table and I check its condition. I see the warm sepia and brown tones of the albumen process, the surface with strata, cracks and chisel marks, and the worn hieroglyphs along the upper band. I focus on the huge fallen fragments in front of the facade, half-buried in sand, and the dune covering part of the base. I think about how the raking light from the right shapes the stone and reveals both the original carving and the accumulated erosion.

I love how the light comes in at a low angle from the right and casts deep shadows on the knees and faces of the colossi. That raking illumination is what we use to bring out relief, and it helps me picture the low desert sun. At the center, between the statues, I spot the niche with the figure crowned by a solar disk, a very clear celestial hint. The dark doorway below and the deep shadow on the left edge make me think about the contrast between the bright exterior and the temple interior.

They are stone giants! I count four sitting in a row and they look so tall that the tiny people by their legs barely reach their knees. One is broken in the middle and another looks very worn, and down below there is a huge head lying in the sand as if an enormous toy had fallen over. I like the little dark door in the middle and the figure with a big sun on its head. The sand climbs up like a slide on one side and I want to climb the giants carefully.
