Six-panel folding screen, ink and slight color on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

A wide, horizontal six-panel folding screen stretches across the view, framed by a narrow greenish border with a small repeating pattern. Most of the surface is warm, aged beige paper, left empty to suggest water, mist, and sky. Thin vertical seams divide the image without breaking its continuity. On the right, the composition is dense: dark, jagged rocks rise in the foreground, a twisted pine leans out over lower stones, and tall evergreens stand beside temple- or palace-like roofs tucked into the hillside. A pale waterfall slips down through the haze in the upper right, near another gnarled pine clinging to a cliff. Moving left, the land opens into a broad, quiet expanse. Small boats appear at different depths: a sailboat and a low rowboat near the lower left-center, and even smaller vessels farther away. At the center, a pine-covered rocky point anchors the bottom edge. To the left, a small island with clustered rocks, trees, and a slender pagoda emerges from the mist, with soft mountain silhouettes behind it. The ink ranges from deep black accents to washes so pale they nearly vanish; slight color is barely perceptible. Tiny vertical calligraphy and a red seal mark the far right edge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin on the right, where rock, pine, and architecture are densest, and then let your eye travel left across the open water toward the distant island. Return to the empty passages: the mist is not background, but the element that joins the shores and creates depth. Finally, notice how the tiny boats recalibrate the scale of everything around them.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this six-panel folding screen was painted in 1668 by Kano Tan'yū (1602–1674), a leading artist of Japan's Edo period. Trained in the Kano family workshop, he was summoned to Edo in 1617 to join the shogunate's official painting studio. His grandfather Eitoku had been a highly sought-after painter of large, colorful compositions for powerful patrons. Tan'yū supervised major mural projects, taught, and became a renowned connoisseur of classical Chinese and Japanese painting. The source title, The Four Seasons, suggests a seasonal progression, although the description does not specify which season corresponds to each passage of the landscape.

Curious detailDato curioso

Much of the screen is almost empty, yet that emptiness does the work: the unpainted paper reads as water, mist, and distance all at once.

I pause before this six-panel screen painted in 1668 by Kano Tan’yū and think about the warm beige paper left empty to suggest water and mist. I notice how ink shifts from intense black on the jagged rocks to washes so pale they almost vanish in the waterfall and distant mountains. The narrow greenish border frames everything without competing and the vertical joints respect the landscape continuity. On the right, the twisted pine and hidden rooftops invite a slow and careful look.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this horizontal landscape as a sky on earth, with its light paper acting as mist and endless water. At the center and left emptiness dominates and sails and boats appear at different distances like constellations on a calm sea. On the right the crag with gnarled pines and the pale waterfall reminds me of a mountain horizon under mist. The pagoda on the distant islet is like a quiet beacon that guides the visual journey across the tranquil expanse.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This screen is super long, with six parts, and it feels like you could sail right into it. I like that almost everything is the color of beige paper, as if mist erased the sky and water. On the right there are dark rocks with crooked pines and a waterfall you can barely see, and rooftops hidden among trees. Toward the left the water opens up and there are little boats, one with a sail and one with oars. Far to the left there is a little island with a tall pagoda and soft mountains behind.
