A horizontal drawing on aged, beige-toned paper, worked almost entirely in browns, with touches of white that catch the light on muscles, clouds, and feathers. In the upper half, a bearded, muscular, nearly nude man flies diagonally: Daedalus. One of his large feathered wings rises at the left and the other stretches to the right; his right arm is lifted, a leg extends behind him, and long ribbons swirl around his torso and thighs. His bearded face, framed by curly hair, turns downward in alarm. Below, in the lower right corner, young Icarus falls head-up but with his body already slipping away. He raises both hands toward his father, ribbons dangling from his wrists, while his loosened wings splay in disorderly feathers around his head and shoulders. Bulging, softly washed clouds fill the left edge and the spaces behind both figures, giving the sense of an empty, unstable sky with no ground. At upper right, a strange clawed creature, faintly drawn among the clouds, resembles a crab or scorpion. Along the bottom edge are small inscriptions and collectors' marks, reminders that this fragile sheet has passed through many hands.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the father above, his outstretched arm still reaching upward, then follow his gaze down to his son. Notice how the loose ribbons, already untied, draw a fragile line between them. That small detail turns a mythological scene into an instant of failed rescue.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this sheet, dated after 1536 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a copy after Giulio Romano (1492/99–1546), made in Italy with pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash over red chalk, heightened with lead white. It illustrates the Greek myth of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun on wings made by his father, Daedalus. As the wax melted and the straps came undone, the youth began his deadly fall while Daedalus looked on in horror. For Renaissance viewers, the story probably served as a moral warning against pride, disobedience, and human fallibility. The identity of the copyist is not known from the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Ovid's Metamorphoses, one of the best-known ancient accounts of the myth, Daedalus warns Icarus to follow a middle course: flying too low would soak the feathers, and too high would melt the wax.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. At what exact moment has the artist chosen to freeze the fall, and what changes because the sea is not shown?¿En qué instante exacto se congela la caída y qué cambia porque no se ve el mar?
  2. How do the positions of father and son express closeness and distance at the same time?¿Cómo expresan las posturas del padre y del hijo cercanía y distancia al mismo tiempo?
  3. Is Icarus mainly a disobedient figure here, or also a victim of his father's invention?¿Ícaro aparece aquí sobre todo como un desobediente o también como víctima del invento de su padre?

The first thing I notice is the beige paper and how delicate this sheet is. It was made with pen and brown ink, soft washes and touches of lead white that still highlight the muscles and feathers. I worry about those light washes and the white, because they are very fragile and fade with light exposure. At the bottom you can see inscriptions and collectors' marks, beautiful traces of how many hands have cared for it since after 1536 so we can still see Daedalus in flight and Icarus falling.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a sky with no ground, just bulging clouds in brown ink that create a huge emptiness. Daedalus flies above in a diagonal pose, his large wings spread wide, and below Icarus is already falling with loose feathers around his head. What intrigues me is that little shape at the upper right, among the clouds, with claws like a crab or scorpion. It looks like a constellation watching the scene. To me this drawing is a sky turned into a warning: flying too close to the sun has consequences.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like they are really flying! At the top is the bearded dad, Daedalus, with very strong muscles and two giant wings, one on each side, and long ribbons tangled around his body. He looks scared, turning to look down. Below is Icarus, younger, falling but with his hands raised to his dad as if asking for help. His little wings are already messy and coming apart. The clouds look like brown cotton balls and the whole drawing is cookie-colored with shiny white touches.

In the upper right corner, hidden among the clouds, what little creature with claws can you spot if you look closely?

    HintPista

Look at the empty sky, upper right, for a small faint silhouette with two open claws.

  2. #2

If you count the people in the drawing, how many human figures are flying or falling in this brown sky?

    HintPista

One is at the top in a diagonal pose with large wings, the other is falling at the bottom right with hands raised.

  3. #3

Along the bottom edge of the sheet, what two kinds of marks did the previous owners leave on the drawing?

    HintPista

Look at the lower edge of the beige paper, they are written traces and stamps from passing through many hands.
