This vase, dated to around 1800, is by Pierre Philippe Thomire (1751–1843), a French maker of gilt bronze, and combines partially gilt bronze with a marble base. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, in 1798 a large quantity of French furnishings was acquired for the Mikhailovsky Palace in St. Petersburg, and some survive in museums such as the Hermitage. A bronze vase virtually identical to this one was included in a recent Hermitage exhibition of works by and attributed to Thomire. Its centaur reliefs also appear on silver wine coolers by Odiot, the Parisian silversmith of Napoleon's Empire period.

To me this vase feels like a small, motionless constellation. It is tall and symmetrical, centered against a gradient background from dark to light gray, as if floating in empty space. The rounded belly and trumpet-shaped foot give it a perfect axis, almost planetary. This huge vase looks like it comes from a funny monster fairy tale. It is dark brown, almost black, but it has very shiny golden parts. Up top there is a garland of little grapes and leaves. In the middle there are two centaurs, half horse and half person, walking with chubby little kids called putti on their backs. On the sides there are two tall ladies in long dresses that work as handles. At the bottom it has a green block with white and pink speckles that looks like mint ice cream. I imagine the centaurs are making music and dropping little things as they walk!
