What you would seeLo que verías

A round bronze disc fills almost the entire frame, seen straight from above against a smooth, matte light-gray background. A soft, deep shadow falls to the lower left, giving the object weight and a slight sense of thickness at its rim. This is the decorated back of the mirror, very dark, almost black, with dull brown, ochre, and faint greenish areas of patina and encrusted dirt, especially near the lower edge and between the reliefs. At the center rises a smooth, hemispherical knob, glossy enough to catch a small white highlight. Around it is a raised square frame, then concentric circles filled with fine parallel lines, small sawtooth triangles, and bands of curling scrolls. Between the square and the rings appear angular T-, L-, and V-like forms, sinuous creatures with curled bodies, small round bosses, and barely legible marks worn by time. The relief is low but crisp in places, worn and dusty in others. The outer rim is thick and dark, with a repeated wave-like pattern. The surface feels hard, cold, and granular, marked by age rather than by shine.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin at the bright highlight on the central knob and move outward, ring by ring, as if crossing boundaries. Then look for the T, L, and V shapes around the square: they turn a decorative surface into a kind of diagram. Finally, scan the surface for wear, dirt, and faint joins; the repairs are part of the object's life.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this bronze TLV mirror was made in China during the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 CE), dated to the 1st to early 200s CE, by an unknown maker. It was cast in a ceramic mold; the central knob and small bosses were polished with a bow drill, raised areas were polished, and a chisel smoothed the square channel. So-called TLV mirrors take their modern name from angular motifs around the central square that resemble those Latin letters. In general terms, the circle and square are often linked to ideas of heaven and earth in Chinese cosmology, although the exact meaning intended by this mirror's maker is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

This mirror was once broken into five pieces; they are now joined with lead-tin solder, and dirt was applied to make the joins less visible.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when we realize this shiny object is shown from its non-reflective back?¿Qué cambia al darnos cuenta de que este objeto brillante se muestra por el lado que no refleja?
  2. How do the circle, the square, and the TLV shapes organize an image of the world?¿Cómo organizan el círculo, el cuadrado y las formas TLV una imagen del mundo?
  3. Should the repairs and the dirt that hides them remain visible, or should restoration try to erase them?¿Las reparaciones y la tierra que las disimula deberían seguir visibles o la restauración tendría que borrarlas?

I focus on what time has left on the bronze: that almost total black with brown, ochre and greenish stains from patina and encrusted earth. I see the contrast between the polished central knob that still catches light and the opaque, grainy zones near the edge. Some reliefs are sharp, others blurred by wear. I admire the work of casting in a mold and polishing with a bow drill, because all that care is still visible under the layer of age.

What amazes me most is how this disc holds an idea of the universe: the outer circle and the square enclosing the central knob. For me it is heaven and earth in an object that fits in the hand. I imagine someone holding it and watching the concentric rings with scrolls and tiny notches spin like constellations. Those T, L and V shapes remind us that we give new names to ancient drawings.

It looks like a giant dark chocolate cookie with lots of dirt on top. In the middle it has a shiny button like a marble that glows in the light. Around it there is a square and then many circles like marble tracks, with curly little tails and tiny dots. Some parts look clear and others all blurry and dusty. I like counting the T, L and V shapes and the little long-bodied animals that tangle together.
