The CrucifixionLa Crucifixión

Du Paquier Porcelain Manufactory (Austrian, active 1719–1864) · c. 1730 · Austria, Vienna

porcelain, ebonized wood cross with gilt bronze mounts

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is shown from the front, centered against a gray background that lightens toward the middle, with no other objects around it. It is a tall, slender cross of almost black ebonized wood, held by a highly ornamented porcelain base. At its center hangs Christ, made of glossy white porcelain: his arms stretch diagonally upward, his nailed hands bear small reddish marks, his head tilts to his right, and his eyes are closed. His thin body reveals ribs, a sunken abdomen, and a wound in his side; his legs cross slightly and his wounded feet rest one over the other. He is covered only by a gold loincloth knotted at the waist, its stiff folds falling to one side. The ends of the cross have gilt-bronze mounts shaped with leaves. At the top, INRI appears inside a gold cartouche, crowned by a small crown. The base, by contrast, is white with gold trim and purple motifs: it has pierced lattice-like panels, a frontal gold relief with small figures, and four curved scroll feet ending in round pads. Soft light creates highlights on the porcelain and metal, contrasting with the matte, dark surface of the cross.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the dark vertical line of the cross and stop at the whiteness of the body, where the contrast concentrates the drama. Then look closely at the wounds, the sunken torso, and the gold loincloth. Finally, move down to the ornate base: its luxurious decoration changes the reading from an image of pain to an object made for contemplation and prestige.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this crucifix was made around 1730 in Vienna by the Du Paquier Porcelain Manufactory, active between 1719 and 1864. The factory was the second oldest European porcelain manufactory after Meissen, and its early wares, made before 1744, bear the name of its founder, the court official Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier. The figure of Christ closely resembles the work of sculptor Georg Raphael Donner (1693–1741) and was probably created by one of his followers. The abundance of gold and the anatomical precision suggest a special commission for a distinguished patron, possibly a member of the Hungarian Esterházy family, although this is not known for certain.

I focus on the materials and their contrast. The cross is made of ebonized wood, almost black, matte and slender, while the Christ figure is in shiny white porcelain, very fragile. I notice the golden cloth knotted at the waist, with stiff folds, and the gilt bronze finials shaped like leaves at the ends. I am concerned with balancing the shine of the metal and porcelain against the dark wooden surface. The white base with gold trim and purple motifs, with its openwork panels and four volute legs, holds everything elegantly but requires constant care.

I see this cross as a vertical axis pointing to the sky, like a gothic telescope. The gray background that lightens toward the center looks like a halo or a soft eclipse around the white porcelain Christ. His arms extended diagonally trace a human constellation, with his head tilted to his right. At the top, the cartouche with INRI and the golden crown cap the piece like a guiding star. Even the four curved legs of the base remind me of orbits holding up the dark firmament of the ebonized wood.

This cross is very tall and almost black, and Jesus is little and white and very shiny. He only wears a little golden cloth around his waist and has tiny red dots on his hands and feet. His eyes are closed and his head is tilted to the side, as if he were asleep. At the top it says INRI in golden letters and there is a little crown. The base below is white with gold and little purple details, it has tiny openwork windows and four little curved legs. I like how everything shines in the light.
