What you would seeLo que verías

At the center, against a smooth background shading from dark gray at the top to pale gray below, stands a round lidded vessel photographed straight on, at mid-height. The lower body is almost spherical, with a small, scarcely visible base that makes it seem to rest directly on its curve. Above it, a broad domed lid with slightly flared sides fits over the mouth; a thin dark line marks the join between the two parts. On top of the lid rises a small thick loop handle, shaped like an inverted U, with an oval opening. The surface is matte, rough, and finely textured: across the whole body runs a dense pattern of tiny diagonal marks and cross-hatching, like beaten fabric or mesh. Colors are mottled and earthy —gray, brown, ochre, and orange-brown patches, paler and almost whitish on the lid, where wear and deposits are more visible. Soft light from above and to the side models the volume, brightens the left edge of the lid, and casts a short, diffuse oval shadow beneath the vessel. There are no people, inscriptions, or other objects; the scale is conveyed only by the handle and the clay's grain.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette: an almost spherical body closed by a domed lid. Then look closely at the surface and notice that the fine pattern covers it entirely, like a woven skin. The small loop on top changes the scale of the piece and invites you to imagine the hand that lifted it.

ContextContexto

This lidded earthenware jar, by an unknown maker, is dated to the 200s–300s CE and attributed to the Baekje kingdom (18 BCE–660 CE) in Korea, during the Three Kingdoms period. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, closed kilns built on hillsides were widely used for this type of pottery. Reducing oxygen inside the kiln produced the gray color and a shimmering surface effect. The body was also shaped by paddling —tanal in Korean— which strengthened the clay and left a geometric pattern. Its exact original use is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The geometric pattern is not only decoration: it is the trace left by the paddling that compacted and strengthened the clay before firing.

  1. What might this jar have held, and how does its closed, rounded form affect what you imagine?¿Qué pudo guardar esta vasija y cómo influye su forma cerrada y redonda en lo que imaginas?
  2. If the pattern began as a practical technique, when does it also become decoration?
  3. What does the wear on the lid suggest about the passage of time and the object's earlier life?¿Qué sugiere el desgaste de la tapa sobre el paso del tiempo y la vida anterior del objeto?

I focus on what the surface tells us. The whole vessel, body and lid, shows that mottled earthy palette in grays, browns and ochres, with the lid paler from wear. That dense pattern of diagonal and crisscross marks is the paddled texture or tanal: it is not just decoration, it strengthened the soft clay. I also notice the thin dark line where the domed lid fits over the almost spherical body, and how oxygen reduction inside the closed hillside kiln left that gray tone and a subtle sheen even though it looks matte.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This vessel makes me think of orbits and eclipses. The lower body is almost a perfect sphere resting on its curve, and on top the wide domed lid looks like a cap closing it, marked by a thin line like an equator. Above, the thick arched handle with its oval opening is like a tiny satellite. The soft light from above models the volume and leaves a short diffuse oval shadow underneath, reminding me how a planet reveals its shape only through the light it receives and the shadow it casts.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a round little house with a hat. The bottom is a big belly almost like a ball, and on top it has a large puffy lid with a tiny arched handle to lift it with one finger. I love tracing with my eyes all those little crisscross lines covering it, as if someone combed it with a magic comb. It has cookie and earth colors, brownish gray and orangey spots, and underneath it makes a soft oval shadow as if it were floating just a little above the gray floor.
