The object is centered against a dark background fading to light gray below, lit with soft, even light that emphasizes volume and texture. It is a small bronze bell with a rounded, bell-shaped body and a slightly lobed rim, covered in a mottled greenish patina from age and oxidation. In the foreground, the bell's body is divided into vertical panels in low relief depicting standing figures, likely deities or bodhisattvas, with tall headdresses and rounded faces, though wear softens the details. Between the figures are ornamental borders with incised vegetal or geometric patterns along the shoulder and base. The handle is elongated and cylindrical, decorated with carved rings and bands resembling bark or braided cord. At the top it culminates in a five-pronged vajra: four sharp, curved outer prongs opening outward and bending toward a thicker, central prong, all with rough, corroded surfaces. The metal shows pitting, irregularities and color variations ranging from verdigris green to brownish gray and dark ochre. The scale suggests a handheld object, intended to be held in one hand during ritual use, with delicate craftsmanship visible despite centuries of wear.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top and trace the curve of the five prongs of the vajra, then move down the carved handle. Pause on the small reliefs around the bell body and notice how the green patina both reveals and veils the faces.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a bronze Buddhist ritual bell with incised designs, dated to the 1300s during the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) in Korea. It is called a five-pronged bell because four prongs bend toward a central prong at the end of the handle, forming a vajra, or lightning bolt, a powerful symbol in esoteric Buddhism. This tradition originated in India, spread across Asia, and was practiced in Korea. The work is in the Korean Art department, a Gift of Mitsuru Tajima. The maker is unknown.

What moves me most about this little bell is its skin, that mottled greenish patina ranging from verdigris green to dark ochre and brownish grey. You can tell the bronze has been breathing for centuries, with pores, irregularities and corrosion that blur the reliefs of the deities. I linger on how the soft light reveals the bell-shaped volume and rounded shoulders, and on the cylindrical handle with braided rings that supports the vajra. It is a small, handheld object, made to last and to wear down through ritual use.

When I look at this bell from the Goryeo dynasty I think about how something small connects to something immense. That central point of the vajra surrounded by four curved prongs reminds me of a star with its rays, or a compass marking the four directions plus the center. The figures in relief on vertical panels look like constellations turning around the bronze. It is from the fourteenth century, from Korea, and although it is a liturgical object to hold in the hand, its shape makes me imagine a portable universe, an esoteric thunderbolt that fits in the palm.

It looks like a magic treasure bell! It is made of bronze and is all spotty green from age, as if it had been hidden for many years. It has little drawings of people with tall hats, although they are a bit blurry. The coolest part is its handle, which is long and rough like a rope, and on top it has a little crown with five spikes, one in the middle and four bent like claws. I imagine it ringing softly when you shake it with one hand and making a tinkle to call fairies.
