What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical graphite drawing on cream-colored, slightly aged paper with faint spots and darker edges. Occupying most of the sheet, a woman's head and neck are shown in strict right profile, facing right. The neck extends down to the lower left corner, where it fades without shoulders, clothing, or background. Her hair, the darkest area of the drawing, is pulled smoothly back from the forehead and gathered into a low bun at the back. Fine, parallel, slightly curved strokes follow the direction of the hair and give it volume and sheen. At the top of the bun rises a tall, pale comb or hair ornament, left almost blank with only a light outline, creating a strong contrast against the shaded hair. The ear is drawn in careful detail, with its inner curves visible. The face is modeled with very soft shading on the cheek, jaw, and neck; the forehead, straight nose, closed lips, and firm chin form a clear, continuous line. Her visible eye looks forward and slightly upward, with a heavy eyelid and no darkened pupil. In the lower left corner is the artist's flowing signature in graphite. The overall effect is quiet, concentrated, and sculptural.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the direction of the gaze, toward a point outside the sheet, and then follow the continuous line from the forehead to the nose and chin. Next, look at the hair: its dense hatching contrasts with the almost blank skin of the face. The comb at the back, barely outlined, changes the reading — it is not only a study of a face, but of a carefully arranged presence.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this 1833 graphite drawing by French sculptor Pierre-Jean David d'Angers (1788–1856) is related to a medallion portrait of the writer George Sand. David d'Angers sought to create a sculptural series capturing the outstanding men and women of his time. George Sand was the pen name of Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, adopted in order to publish her work. The source notes that the artist sympathetically captured her independence in her forward, upward gaze, as if caught in thought. The exact sitting or working process for this sheet is not stated in the source.

I look at this graphite on aged cream paper and I am struck by its economy of means. The artist leaves the background empty and focuses the work on the dark hair, built with fine parallel strokes that create volume, and on the contrast with the light comb that is barely outlined. The face and neck have a very soft, sculptural shading. The sheet shows darkened edges and faint age spots. At the lower left, the fluid graphite signature anchors the composition without competing with the serene profile.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As if watching an eclipse in profile, I see this head cut out against the void of the cream paper. With no background and no stars, only the pure contour of forehead, nose, lips and chin. I am intrigued by the orbit of that gaze directed forward and slightly upward, alert to something outside the frame. The dark bun is like a compact night and the light comb shines like a thin crescent. Everything is silence and concentration, a suspended form that seems to orbit its own thoughts.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the lady is playing statue and stayed very still looking to the right. Her hair is combed back very neatly and tied in a bun, and on top she has a comb that you can barely see because it is so light. You can see her little ear really well with all its tiny curves. She has no clothes and no background, just her head and her long neck that fades into the corner. She looks calm, as if she is thinking of a story.

In the drawing, what light and barely outlined object sticks up above the dark bun?

    HintPista

Look for the strongest contrast in the hairstyle: the darkest area below and the lightest area on top, left almost white.

  2. #2

Which way does the profile face and what facial detail is hidden by that view?

    HintPista

Notice the direction of the nose and count how many eyes you can see in the strict profile.

  3. #3

What color is the paper the portrait is drawn on?

    HintPista

It is not bright white, it is a warm aged tone, like a light cookie, visible in the background and the comb.
