What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal etching in black ink on bone-colored paper, whose slightly irregular edges and aged tone are visible around a fine rectangular border. Occupying almost the entire width, in strict side view facing left, is an enormous lobster resting on the surface of a river. In the foreground, its two oversized claws open at the far left, one above the other, with serrated inner edges and mottled shells. Two long, thin antennae run back toward the head, where a dark, round eye stands out amid small curling forms. The thick thorax is covered in tiny spots, and the abdomen extends to the right as a sequence of broad, overlapping segments, ending in a lobed tail fin. Five slender legs hang beneath the body, their tips barely breaking the water. Short, wavy, parallel hatching renders the river, with paler ripples around the animal. Above, the sky is mostly empty, except for horizontal streaks of cloud at the top. Below the image, centered lettering reads “PERICLEMENE,” with further inscriptions at the lower left and right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the mismatch between the title, which promises a naval battle, and the image, which at first looks like a natural-history study. Then look closely at the head, the legs touching the water, and the segmented tail to judge its scale. Finally, read the lettering along the bottom, which turns the animal into a named, made object for a celebration.

ContextContexto

This etching, dated 1608 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, is credited to Remigio Cantagallina and Jacopo Ligozzi. According to its title, it belongs to a series recording a mock naval combat staged on the Arno River in Florence for the marriage of Cosimo de' Medici, Prince of Tuscany, and Maria Maddalena of Austria. The pictured vessel or festival machine was called Periclemene, and the inscription below credits its making to Michelagnolo Baglioni. Such prints preserved ephemeral court spectacles that would otherwise have vanished after the event. How the structure was crewed or moved is not explained in the plate, and is not known from the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact: despite the reference to a naval battle, no sailors, weapons, or other vessels are visible; the whole engagement is suggested by a single giant lobster gliding alone across the river.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does our reading of the lobster change once we learn it is not only an animal, but a festival machine?¿Cómo cambia nuestra lectura de la langosta cuando sabemos que no es solo un animal, sino una máquina de fiesta?
  2. Why record an ephemeral river spectacle in a small, monochrome print?¿Por qué conservar un espectáculo fluvial efímero en una estampa pequeña y en blanco y negro?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on this etching in black ink on bone-colored paper with irregular edges and an aged tone. I notice the dotted thorax, the mottled texture of the toothed pincers and the wavy strokes of the Arno water. The 1608 sheet, attributed to Cantagallina and Ligozzi and kept in Cleveland, documents the festive machine Periclemene, with its legible lower inscription and an almost empty sky with bands of clouds. It is a well-preserved record of an ephemeral event.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I like to read this almost empty 1608 sky as a clear firmament over Florence. Below, the river looks like a milky way of short parallel strokes where the Periclemene floats, a giant lobster in left-facing profile with extremely long antennae. Its dark round eye recalls a planet under observation, and the segmented abdomen suggests aligned constellations. The print by Cantagallina and Ligozzi for the Medici wedding used wonder the way we use the telescope to marvel at the heavens.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a giant lobster swimming in a river! It has two huge pincers with little teeth, one over the other on the left side, and two super long antennae that look like whiskers. Its body is like a train of bumpy segments that ends in a fan-shaped tail. Five skinny little legs hang underneath and barely touch the water made of striped waves. At the bottom it says PERICLEMENE and the sky is almost empty with just a few little clouds. It makes me laugh and feel a bit scared at the same time.
