What you would seeLo que verías

A medieval codex page viewed straight on, filling almost the entire frame, with a slight curl of the parchment at the right edge revealing its bound volume. The text is arranged in two dense columns of tiny Gothic script in black and brown ink, ruled and accented with thin red and blue lines. In the lower left margin a large historiated initial P dominates, extending vertically for nearly half the page height. Its stem is deep blue with red and gold filigree inside, ending in scrolling foliate terminals with stylized leaves and a small golden head. Inside the lower bowl of the letter, against a red ground dotted with gold, sits a small figure of an elderly man in three-quarter view: balding with a gray beard, wearing a yellow tunic and a gray-blue mantle, holding a book or scroll in a teaching gesture. Lighting is soft and even, typical of a museum case, revealing the matte, slightly cockled texture of the vellum, the metallic sheen of burnished gold, and subtle wrinkles and stains of aged parchment. At the top, a rubricated header in red and blue reads AD TIMOTHEUM I.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the two dense text columns to appreciate the Gothic script, then move to the large blue P in the left margin. Pause at the small roundel at the bottom and notice how the tiny figure of Paul turns a letter into a doorway into the sacred text.

ContextContexto

This is folio 456r from a Vulgate Bible made around 1275–1300, probably in southern France, perhaps Toulouse, now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. As the source notes, the 13th century was the first time the Bible was produced as a single portable volume with an officially sanctioned order of books and chapters. This example has a highly hierarchical decorative program: full or nearly full-page initials for major openings, historiated initials for each book, and illuminated initials for prologues. The large P shown here marks the beginning of the First Epistle to Timothy and, according to the museum record, depicts Paul seated. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum.

Curious detailDato curioso

Portable 13th-century Bibles like this one were among the first to contain the entire biblical text in a single handy volume, an innovation linked to the needs of universities and mendicant preaching, which required a clear hierarchy of decoration to navigate quickly.

I linger on how the vellum seems to breathe under the even showcase light, with its matte, slightly rippled surface, fine wrinkles and age spots that reveal its history. The deep blue of the large P initial, with red filigree and burnished gold that still gleams, shows the steady hand of someone painting in tempera. The red background dotted with gold behind Paul and the ruling in blue and red make me think of hands that measured every line so the gothic text in two dense columns could rest in perfect order.

When I look at this page I think about coordinates and maps to avoid getting lost. This portable thirteenth-century Bible, made to travel as a single volume, works like an atlas of sacred text. The heading reading AD TIMOTHEUM I at the top is like the label of a constellation, and the large blue P with gold is a guiding star marking where a new journey begins. Paul seated with his book is the reference point that orients the reader between two dense columns, like a beacon in a sky crowded with signs.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The letter P is huge and looks like a slide! It is blue with red and shiny gold decorations that sparkle like treasure and ends in little leaves and a tiny golden head. Inside, in a little red hole with gold dots, there is a bald man with a white beard, wearing a yellow tunic and a gray-blue cloak, hugging a book as if he were about to tell us a story. I love that the parchment curves a little on the right because you can tell it is a real book, chubby and very old.
