This little box makes me think of patient hands. It is a snuff box from Paris, made between 1880 and 1900 in gold, enamel and agate. I look at the shine of polished gold, the fragile green and pink enamel and the translucent agate with its dark dendritic veins. All that relief work, the filigree, the garlands and the torch-shaped pilasters, shows a virtuosity that imitates the eighteenth century. As a conservator I wonder how one would clean it without damaging the vitreous enamel or dulling the pale pearls along the border.
