What you would seeLo que verías
The piece stands at the centre of the image, photographed from the front against a plain grey background that darkens towards the top and lightens near the bottom. It is a tall, empty goblet with no raised stem, made of almost completely transparent glass. Its body widens gently from the lower part to the upper rim, with straight, thin, smooth walls through which the background can be seen. The rim is a fine, slightly shining line forming a wide, circular mouth seen in slight perspective. The light is soft and diffuse. It creates discreet reflections on the rim and walls, and especially on the inner bottom of the glass, where an oval glow with pinkish and amber tones appears. There is no liquid, no marks and no other objects; that absence emphasises the purity of the surfaces. All the decoration is concentrated at the bottom: a wide, low, golden-amber ring encircles the base like a plinth. On it, a procession of small dogs in relief can be made out, in motion, among vegetal or sinuous forms that are barely legible at this scale. The moulded, somewhat irregular texture of that ring contrasts with the smoothness of the glass above. A very faint shadow extends to the right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the goblet as a whole and notice how empty and weightless the upper part feels. Then move down to the golden ring: that is where the weight, colour and movement are concentrated. Following the dogs around the base changes the piece from a simple drinking glass into a small sculptural frieze.

Curious detailDato curioso
Almost all of the decoration is confined to the narrow ring at the bottom, leaving the rest of the goblet completely clear — the ornament works like a piece of jewellery worn at the base of the glass.

- How does the experience of drinking from this goblet change when the decoration is at the base rather than where the hand or lips touch?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de beber en este vaso cuando la decoración está en la base y no donde tocan la mano o los labios?
- What effect does the contrast create between the invisible, smooth upper glass and the golden, sculpted ring?¿Qué efecto crea el contraste entre el vidrio superior, liso y casi invisible, y el anillo dorado y esculpido?

This Lalique gobelet invites a calm, close look. The upper part is all transparency, with thin smooth walls and a fine rim that catches a gentle shine. Down below is the wide band in golden amber with little dogs in relief among winding vegetal shapes. That molded, slightly irregular texture contrasts with the purity of the clear glass above. Soft light leaves a rosy amber oval glow inside the bottom and a faint shadow to the right.

I see this gobelet as a small observatory for light. The tall transparent body and wide mouth let light pass through and bend it gently, like a simple lens. The gray background that lightens near the base helps us notice reflections on the rim and that luminous pinkish amber oval inside. The low golden band with dogs in motion feels like a horizon with silhouettes, a miniature landscape beneath a clear and serene glass sky.

I love the tiny dogs at the bottom! They look like they are running around the glass, playing together. The top part is totally clear and you can see right through it, like invisible water. It has no stem and its rim is very thin with a little shine. Inside at the bottom there is a pinky amber light that looks like a little treasure. If you fill it with water, the doggies would surely look like they are dancing.
