What you would seeLo que verías

A wide horizontal scene, framed by a red border, is divided into three bands: a wall of grey, vertically striated cliffs across the top; a band of yellow earth in the middle; and a broad grey river below. On the yellow bank, the same large orange tiger with black stripes appears three times. At upper center it climbs a dark rock looking back, then it leaps to the right with its body stretched out and mouth open, and finally, at lower right, only its head, forelegs, and part of its striped body emerge from the water. At upper left, beside a tree, lies the dark carcass of a bull used as bait. Around the edges, small groups of men watch from the cliffs, play drums and trumpets, shout, or aim muskets from both sides. In the foreground, the king stands at the prow of an ornate red boat, wearing dark clothing and a green halo-like headdress, firing a long musket whose smoke curls toward the leaping tiger. Behind him, courtiers and attendants fill the boat; to the left another vessel carries women in red and orange and more onlookers. A small pink boat with three men at lower right, along with turtles and fish in the river, completes the scene. The paint is flat and detailed, with fine lines, mineral-like colors, and no deep perspective.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the tiger from left to right and then down into the river: it is the same animal at three successive moments, not three different tigers. Next, look for the king at the prow of the red boat, whose shot links the yellow bank to the grey water. The small turtles, fish, and musicians at the edges change a violent scene into a courtly, almost festive spectacle.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work, by an unknown artist, was made around 1830–40 in Kota, a Rajput kingdom in Rajasthan, northwestern India. It is executed in gum tempera with gold and silver on paper. It depicts Ram Singh II, who ruled Kota from 1827 to 1866, during a ritual tiger hunt: the animal is lured out, driven toward the river with drums, trumpets, arrows, and muskets, and shot by the king before the court. The source explains that the tiger, believed to embody shakti, or divine creative energy, would later be offered ceremonially so that energy might become blessings for the kingdom. It belongs to Rajput court painting, inspired by the Mughal imperial model but with distinctive local styles.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: beneath the boats, small green turtles and pale fish swim almost unnoticed, while the decisive royal shot takes place just above them.

If you look closely you will see no volume or shading, everything is fine line and flat color. The gum tempera on paper leaves a matte and intense finish, with touches of gold and silver still shining in the details. Notice the red border enclosing the scene and how the yellow of the bank contrasts with the gray of the cliff and the river. It is a work from about 1830 to 1840 made in Kota, Rajasthan, and its preservation depends on protecting those mineral pigments from light and humidity.

I am fascinated that the tiger appears three times in the same image, like frames in a sequence. First it climbs the rock looking back, then it leaps with its body stretched and its mouth open, and finally it swims in the river where we only see its head and back. There is no deep perspective, time is told from left to right across the yellow band. It is a continuous narration where the painter forces us to follow the animal with our eyes, as if following a constellation in the sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The tiger appears three times and it is the same one! It is orange with black stripes and it runs very scared. Everyone makes a lot of noise with drums and trumpets to make it go into the river and the men on the cliffs watch it shouting. The king stands on a pretty red boat with a green hat that looks like a halo and shoots with a musket that puffs little smoke. Down below there are little turtles and fish swimming and another pink boat with three men watching everything.
